The 1.8 n/a engine is going to go thru a lot of work this summer, Ur thoughts on my list.

Port/Polish heads
Bigger valves
Ported manifold
Balanced Crank
Headers
Bore engine (2.0)

Turbotech racing sells the cobalt 2.0 pistons for 399 and 499..if this could work. my pockets would be very empty lol
Also i wonder if Darton would make a sleeve kit for the sonic like they did the cobalts....

moving from 1.8 to 2.0 would not mean you need the same pistons the LNF would use. Displacement is not just the bore but also the stroke. You will need a custom set of pistons and rings I'm sure of it.

Im not very mechanically inclined, but once all of this is done, how does this affect the sonic? As in, do these modifications increase hp? Or what? Please enlighten me on what all of this does, im quite interested.

Any engine is basically a really big air pump, the more volume you pump the more power you make. He is trying to make it a bigger more efficient pump.

all of them should theoretically increase power, except for balancing the crank. if he can get a balanced crank without counterweights, it should spin faster. should.

Any engine is basically a really big air pump, the more volume you pump the more power you make. He is trying to make it a bigger more efficient pump.

I love having you guys around lol. Going back to topic tho. Hopefully if all works out, i should have the first 2.0 sonic on the streets....with a turbo

IMHO you'd be better off getting the block stroked instead of poked. If you plan on going forced induction down the road get those parts ready for when you build up the motor. Most of the time the pistons you would use for an N/A build won't work well with a FI build. Also you'll need to make sure the compression ratios will be within reason for FI down the road. Lets say you build up a bada$$ 2.0 with something like 12.5:1 as soon as you through 5psi at the motor you'll be in for a wallet removal surgery...

Wow that sounds expensive. lol How much will this set u back? Cause if you could tweak out all things that could possibly blow up the engine, It also sounds like you will have a much more faster sonic than many of the 1.4T? Amicorrect? Or would the 2.0 not change since turbo goes vroooooooom, and my 1.8 goes. vroom...

If he ends up with a built 2.0 turbo that's been ported, polished, and balanced he could whoop the pants off of a 1.4T. If someone with a 1.4T put in the same amount of $$$ he wouldn't stand a chance IMHO.

What if he just does all that, BUT doesnt turbo it? Would it still have a chance? Like pretty much saying if the bigger engine but no turbo increase its chances against the 1.4T or other cars in same category?

2.0T>1.4T ok
2.0>1.4T --> ?
2.0<1.4T(beefed up) ok

...
(More money out of pocket to fix up 1.8 engine just to add turbo)

So it sounds like although it may be more expensive to make it 2.0, the 2.0T would be no longer able to say its in same range as other sonics cause its racecar? UNLESS like you said a 1.4T threw in just as much money so that would be in same category as the 2.0T which means neither could be put in same category as other sonics. soo both 1.4tt and 2.0t = racecar?

How am i doing? getting closer to learning this stuff?
