FWIW - studded tires are illegal in MN and I wouldn't run them if they were legal.
The OE Hankook's on the Sonic do suck. But I've had other Hankook's were very decent all season tires.
I can believe that running the OE tires would cause some frightening experiences in the winter.
I personally don't care for Michelins. They last forever - but that's inherent with real hard rubber. Hard rubber doesn't correlate very well with grip.
I replaced my factory tires with Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice tires - and they do very well on ice. On a second set of wheels, I have some Goodyear Eagle Sports (225/50/16 vs the OE 205/55/16 - same overall diameter) ready to go when the snow and ice leave in about a month and a half.
