New Sonic Owner from Canada!

Hey all! I bought my 2014 Sonic LT this past June from a dealer with very few km on it (14k). This is my first car I've purchased on my own (previously purchased vehicles with my ex-husband's input/family needs first so it never ended up being what I wanted). So, I am excited to have a Sonic that I absolutely fell in love with the second I got into the car for a test drive. I shopped around a lot but I always kept coming back to the Sonic so I knew it was the one for me!

I don't know how much modding I will do to Lucy since it is mostly for commuting back/forth to work and trucking my young kids around, but there certainly are some things I'd like to do to her.

First up is some new winter boots for her. I live in Nova Scotia, so our winters are pretty gross (tons of snow, flash freezing, and slush galore) so I'm curious what people on here recommend. I know the standard size is 205/50/17s but does anybody put on 16s for the winter?

Another Canuck here in Ontario. I can't necessarily recommend a particular snow tire but you can use either 16" or 17" snows. The skinnier 16" tires usually work a little better in snow but 17's should be fine. In either case, its best to have a separate set of rims for the snows.

By the way, do you know whether your Sonic was previously from a rental fleet or trade-in from a private owner. I ask because that 14k mileage on a 1 year old car is typical of dealer-purchased rentals.

My car was a lease return from that dealer, they wanted to upgrade. So, I am happy to know all the service history, etc. from the previous owner. It also meant a good deal for me!

Pictures of my car are below... Took them tonight after I picked up the kiddos for the week. Desperately need to get it in for a wash. Bonus is the appearance of my son. I could not convince him to get out of the picture. Oh well!

Hey!

I grew up in NS. I saw that there is lots of Sonics in the province. I actually only have 15 inch winter tires. That does make them less expensive to buy.

Welcome!!! I have the sonic 16" rims 205/55/16 for summer and use 15" steel rims 195/65/15 for the winter. Michelin x13 winter tires are really good but pricey, wife spent $1050 for her Benz but those were 18" so they should be cheaper for like 15"/16" rims.

You could shop around and look for sets for sale in your local area on kijiji or craigslist. You can you use chevy cruze rims which have the same bolt pattern as our sonics which are 5x105.

I'm curious, did you put that bumper sticker or that's how you bought it?

Thanks for all the welcome messages. I'm thrilled to be on the site and a Sonic owner. It's a wonderful little hatchback, and I have no doubts I made the right choice.

It's good to hear that others put 16s on their car in the winter. 17s are quite a bit more expensive so if I can get away with cheaper tires, I absolutely will go that route.

haha, well you know, I did divorce him, so I suppose that says something.

Sadly, I got into a car accident with my Sonic this morning (I was not at fault), but the front right is beat up, and I'm not sure how much it'll cost to fix the damage on her. Very sad day!

Major Discount across the street from Portland Street Superstore has awesome prices for new tires I found.
I didn't even know they existed until I had to shop around trying to find a better price on truck tires then what Steele would sell them to me for our Avalanche.

I’ll probably get 16” on winter rims for my RS next month. It’ll probably ride a lot better over the ice/snow ruts that Halifax’s snow clearing Ops like to leave us with.

Thank you for the heads up about the tire place. I will be checking them out. I decided I'll be getting 16" with winter rims for the winter.. It seems like it would be the safest bet, considering our winters here.

Yeah, I hope she looks brand new too. Since they need to take the bumper off of my car, I am hoping I may be able to convince them to let me have my chrome halos from the headlights so I can paint them and give them back to them before my bumper goes back on. I'm not so interested in taking my entire bumper off myself. Not having a garage also makes that more difficult.
