When you get your tune and get the CEL turned off in the tune I would take a data log of the car and send it in so Vince @Trifecta can look it over and make sure it looks good.

Thank you! I will definitely remember to do that! Planning on tuning as soon as possible. I think instead of buying a downpipe I will either have my catalytic material removed and hollow my current cat for full flow or I will have my muffler guy make a downpipe for me. He said he would make me one for around 80 bucks.

@rdss, Absolutely! I was going to have the tune made for 93 octane, injen cold air, and full straight pipe same day I get the downpipe made. I am just debating on if a full straight pipe could be done at all possible with no codes or damages without a tune. (for learning purposes)

You would have to be willing to get a downpipe/gut your stocker, and run the defoulers to see what happens. I'm pretty a sure everyone here just tunes first.

Trust me, you'll need something to soften it up. Several of the best set-ups (derpthroat exhaust) here have at least an aftermarket resonator.

I used to drive around in a 152DB car with a walled off pair of 18s... It was so loud people would gag and nearly puke if i played it beside them at red lights. several people ran red lights to get away from it. Loudness is the very least of my worries lol.

Getting dirty looks and/or pulled over for ear shattering exhaust is another.

No damage from running an "untuned" car with a straight exhaust (as long as it has an adequate length exhaust *I.e. not just 6in long* and has electronic fuel injection)

Any changes in flow/power etc will be observed by the Mass Airflow sensor and porper fueling will still occur..

Running that 1st spacer on the 1st O2 sensor would probably causeengine damage and unoptimized engine performance because it will no longer be subject to a proper/fresh exhuast stream and will not report the right data back to the ecm causing bad fuel trims..

I don't know if it would prevent a code if installed on the 2nd O2, I see the logic behind it.. also not sure it would improve the life of an O2, all modern sensors require heat to be accurate and have heaters built into them.

I went about 200mi before popping a code and about 60 between resets. No limp home mode

Not sure if this has been explained and I don't want to read it all. I had a civic with a bad cat and was getting a code for catalyst system below efficiency. I picked up a spark plug defouler @ autozone. Drilled out the bottom, without disturbing the threads. Then you install the oxygen sensor into the defouler and defouler into bung. This pulls the sensor out of the exhaust far enough to make it read cleaner, but still heats up enough so the ecu knows it is there. $5 vs $500 for the same result, car still passed sniff test


Edit: the defouler sensor combo are installed where the secondary o2 goes

Thank you all, Good info here! I have read a few places and as jeremiah said, and some people on blazer forums mentioned. It removed cel from there cat issues when installing the spacer.

Back on this topic again, Me and my friend are working on his sonic and we are wanting to try this for him... He is going for loud and low, Me and him both are curious if we gutted his cat material out and used an o2 defouler on his 2nd sensor if it could save him by pulling out of the stream... I'm guessing without the cat material the 2nd sensor would get hotter than usual and throw codes from the excessive temperatures. Could stacked foulers maybe fix this issue for him?

There won't be any temp problems, you just need to keep the 2nd O2 sensor from reading increased emmisions.

I don't think the absence of the catylyst will increase the temp at the 2nd sensor. I believe it would actually be hotter with it, those suckers get HOT. When I temp gunned my cat it was darn near the hootest part of the exhaust system.

I will be trying this shortly. I recently installed the down and mid-pipes. No CEL yet but I've only driven about 25 miles. Here in NY, inspection checks for monitor readiness in the ECU. If it's disabled, I'll fail. I'll be trying one or a combination of these. I have both on the way. I'll let you know how it works out. BTW, don't try the spark plug defouler with this sensor. It is bigger than 1/2" and you'll take out the threads if you try to drill it big enough. Also, the rear O2 sensor monitors catalyst efficiency only and does not control fuel trims.

thanks, I was really wanting to do it to my buddies car today too. Chances are I think it would work... With the spacer in place the rear sensor would only ever see enough exhaust to be equivalent to an idle Id think. There couldn't be any way it would get too hot or anything.

Yeah, I guess it's hit and miss with these things. The ZZP Cruze midpipe actually has the spacer built into it. Seems that it works for some and not for others. The spacer you referenced in the first post looks interesting. It comes with different jets to fine tune it.

Had them remove the 1st cats material, my second cat has been removed, had them remove the magnaflow muffler also. So I am officially 3" turbo back with nothing but a straight through resonator. Stock tune and so far no codes are thrown.
