Ported intake manifold and MPG

The flywheel will be interesting to see what effect that has. I know it's around the forum somewhere, but the MZ0 is the RS transmission, no? Even if not going for MPG's, that's a big hit. The possible flywheel/MPG change will be hard to quantify though if you're going to be changing a bunch of stuff at the same time to tone it down as you've mentioned.

Overall which transmission do you think is the best fit for the 1.4 since you've had a lot of seat time with a few of them?

The RS gets the MR5 version. It's got an even bigger final drive than the MZ0.

If MPG is not a concern, the MZ0 is a ton of fun. You basically lose one overdrive, and the 4th to 5th shift is weird. As in it feels like half a shift. But the rest is great for staying in the torque band.

I'll be changing stuff in phases. The first will be reverting to stock fly/clutch. Then some of the other stuff later. I'll try to see if I can notice a discernible difference. I've been averaging 30 mpg for 8 months. CONSISTENTLY.

I have not seen a loss in MPG with the intake mod. I have seen a slight gain when I keep my foot out of the throttle lol. The max MPG I've seen was 51. This was a trip from Knoxville to cincy.

I did have a slight loss of low end torque but, this is when I'm hypermiling around 1100rpm. So for normal driving, the loss in some low end torque should not be to noticeable

Adding on to what scot said earlier in the thread, one way they can achieve faster cat warm up is double injection and/or a electronically actuated wastegate. These came out when I worked for BMW as a technician and, paired with their valvetronic and VVT system, it lowered emissions to SULEV levels on specific models. the cat. warm up time was reduced to around 20 seconds.

Am I just doing something wrong?? I see everyone with 30+ MPG and Im barely hitting 23... I know theres some break-in time (I just hit 2020 miles) but will I start getting more MPG as more miles I put on? Just wondering... :blankface:

I did not have my car at 2020 but I had a loaner LS with very few miles it was was getting like 33.

0 your MPG display right before a highway drive and see what it says after a good stretch?

I've never had that low of miles and I own a rs. Had since like 10 miles on the od and lowest I ever saw was 34 average and best I have seen is 40 average after a tank if gas.

Mad you should be getting 40 mpg easily. Reset you average mpg at each fillup and check next time you get gas.

Only way you should be seeing low mpg if you are solid city driving. And it should be in the 27 mpg range even then. Least from what I have read.

Just out of curiosity... Could the slow increase in the fuel mileage be the fuel trims adjusting to the new air ratio that is being allowed and that is why it seems to steadily increase until the trims equalize? Thoughts?

I used to tinker tune my old 91 Talon and I had to watch the fuel trims to make sure they stayed within acceptable limits and I know that sometimes when I did small engine modifications, it would change the fuel trims over a few tanks of gas and my MPG would alter slightly up or down based on the trims.

Out of the 7171 miles currently on my car It is probably about 4500-5000 highway and 1500-2000 city miles. I don't drive like an idiot but I do drive brisk and have fun and I'm averaging 28 MPG (up to 30.5 after 800 mile trip from Ohio to Connecticut) that's completely stock.
