I am helping a friend with his 2013 Sonic 1.8L and there appears to be an oil leak coming out of the variable valve timing solenoid on the intake side. I have attached 2 pictures, one showing the VVT solenoid covered in what appears to be oil. The other is showing directly below onto the alternator that has the same substance on it. The car has around 76,000 miles on it.
Questions
1) Could it be something other than oil that has leaked all over the VVT solenoid?
2) Would the whole VVT solenoid need to be replaced or is there a gasket or seal that could be changed?
3) Is the alternator at risk of damage with having been leaked on?
