Removing the "Mustache" ??

You guys realize there is a huge metal crash beam behind there, right?

Wait a minute...are we talking about the same thing? If you are referring to the piece of solid plastic the runs along the top of the lower grill, no, there is nothing behind it. I just stuck my finger through the grill and felt behind it, and there is some kind of foam/rubber insert. In fact, it was popped out a little bit from when I drilled through the license plate screws, and I managed to push it back in.

I just went and looked again...that beam is about two inches back or so. With black cover removed and replaced with a full grill, it shouldn't be very noticeable. I get the impression that the presence of that wide bar is more for the installation of a license plate than anything. I can't imagine it serves any practical purpose beyond that.

And that white crash beam is what is painted black and still noticeable on the yellow Sonic as well as the RS, we can't get around the fact that it will alway be there unless you want to it off and lose the little crash protection it provides.

I do agree with Eric, if you gut all the grill and "mustache" you can get some mesh in there, but like he also added, it's going to be time consuming and will take some beers (maybe a lot) and cussing to get it done.

I really don't think it would be very noticeable in person, though. Look at the pic of the RS at the beginning of this thread. We need THAT grill.

I'd rather barely see a black bar behind the grill than see the huge piece of plastic that exists there now.

I think it looks a ton better and hides it quite nicely, I think the main thing is that there is a crash bar behind the "mustache" and it will always be there whether it's noticeable or hidden well. I think we will be able to buy an RS grille and replace ours with it.

For me personally, if I could put aftermarket mesh grilles in the car that matched the ones that were in my CTS-V (polished stainless or chrome) that would be the way I go.

are you sure the rs grill is wider? it looks to be the same to me in relation to the headlights. i think it only looks wider because of the lack of the bumper cover and possibly the lens used to the the photos you are looking at.
