Maybe a quick break down of the exhaust system will help clarify this.
On the 1.8 the exhaust starts at the cylinder head.
-The 1st part is the exhaust manifold/ header that has the 1st catalytic converter.
-The mid pipe bolts to the header and also the 2nd cat. It also contains the flex pipe.
-The 2nd cat bolts to the mid pipe and also the cat-back part of the exhaust.
-Finally is the cat-back part. It contains the resonator and muffler. It's the longest part of the exhaust, has to go up and around the muffler, and has no flanges aside from at the 2nd cat.
Because it's such a long and winding part of the exhaust it has to be cut to be removed from the car, unless you want to spend hours dropping the rear axle to clear it. This also means that anything you want to change means cutting the catback section.
There's also not much point in worrying about your exhaust warranty. About the only thing that it will cover is if the exhaust rusts out, which isn't too common in 5 years or 100k mile. It's about as worthwhile as insurance on $5 reading glasses.
