Rotational/cyclic idle

Our turbo is liquid cooled. Of this I am 100% certain.

Last I checked, oil is considered a liquid.

Water cooled. Most turbos are oil cooled but newer ones are water cooled to reduce oil temps and because no one ever let's them idle down. I do think that the 1.4 is both water and oil cooled

indeed, and last I checked oil is required to lubricate the bearings in the turbo, so it needs no mention. But I'll rephrase, I am completely postive the turbo on our sonic recieves additional cooling from engine coolant that is plumbed into the turbos center section. ;p

I've had my turbo out so I've seen everything that attaches to it.

After extensive discussion and dissection of the cut away's and technical drawings of the OEM turbo it is only oil cooled, therefore we should not shut it off with hot oil in the turbo. The cooling benefit of this type of firing order are for cooling the cylinders more than turbo (although it will bring all of the temps down across the board) I just don't see a need for it without the anti-lag and launch control. It does sound awesome but an ice bag on the turbo will do a better job of cooling off turbo IMHO

The turbo on this car is indeed water cooled in addition to oil. Most, if not all, newer OEM turbos are water and oil cooled. More so water for cooling and oil for lubrication but the oil does also carry heat away as it exits. Manufacturers do both as it increases longevity of the turbo. Car makers have to take into consideration of non car enthusiasts that will run the car hard and then park it.

I've had my turbo out so I've seen everything that attaches to it.

I have not had my turbo off but I have traced the lines. Two in and two out.

I'm not sure this is really a trend. I can recall even Chrysler turbo cars of the 80's having water cooled turbochargers. Volvo switched to it in 1987. Mitsu Eclipse had it. Etc...

Maybe from 85 and back it was not as common. Cars like the Buick GNX I think were oil cooled only. Probably the SVO Mustang also. But we are coming up on nearly 30 years now.

-edit- Seems even Ford was water cooling their turbochargers in cars from around 84 and up (Thurderbird TurboCoupe, Merkur XR4Ti and SVO Mustang). Seems that the mid 80's was when this really became commonplace and standard OP.

Essentially, it's probably possible but would take R&D and isn't really necessary.

I can't remember if my t-type was water and oil but I know my shadow was.... T-type was 79 and shadow was 87
