Since I've had my Sonic, the only time I've had issues with the car is during the winter times. I bought the car at the end of November of 2011. So, only within a month did I experience problems.
Primarily on first starts. Last year, I had cranking issues on first starts, along with the rough idling, the engine light flashing with the stability control light solidly on. I would immediately turn the vehicle off, wait several seconds and turn in on again, and the car runs fine and dandy with no problems at all. I did take into the dealer for the problems and all they did was clean the fuel injectors and told me to use only their "top-tier" gasoline, to which I had and continue to do so.
Spring and summer time came around, the car ran smoothly and fine. No problems at all. Then, winter came around again...
I've experienced the same problems listed above, only without the cranking issue on first starts. The cranking no longer a concern but all the others are. When I took it into the dealer again, they told me they've found that I had a misfire at some point 1500 miles previous from the time brought it in, to which they said it was odd the engine light came on at such a delayed time. So they fixed that and told me to perhaps use a lower octane fuel (I've always, always used premium fuel and never had problems with the octane until this car).*
So I started using mid-grade fuel. And no noticeable difference, only that now the engine light randomly and solidly comes on, on certain ignitions. And all I've been told is that the premium fuel is still working its way out of the engine as it burns and told me to give it some more time for the mid-grade fuel to works its way through the system. It's been almost 3 weeks and still have those intermittent issues. Given that time, the mid-grade fuel has had more than enough time to work itself through the fuel system. I've taken it in a couple more times with the engine light warning light, they've found nothing wrong with the car and have only turned off the engine warning light.
Sorry if its long winded...
