Update: Got her done to $13,000. Not bad since I started this thread 3 months ago.

I'm concurrently socking away a "lay-off" savings. I want to have enough put away to survive 8 months without working if times get rough. That goal should be achieved by October if work stays steady.

Once that happens, I'll be chunking down my loan at a break neck speed.

Hi Preloader,

If you make at least ~$20 an hour (40hr weeks) you should qualify for the maximum "unemployment compensation" of $450 a week, before taxes.
Hopefully it will not come to that. It would be for at least 6 months if needed.

I factor that into my lay-off survival. It equates to about $1,800/month in unemployment. My budget requires about $2,800/month, to cover mortgage, car payment, gas, groceries and a small allowance for weekly entertainment.

So that means I need an additional $1,000 a month on top of the $1,800 to survive. So the lay-off savings goal is at least $8,000, but I'm padding it to $10k.

If fit hits the shan, I'll can live pleasantly for 10 months. I've never been so responsible.
