Big Cars are safer in a crash? What is interesting is that high horsepower cars are about the same size, although heavier, than the Chevy Sonic.

Is like to know where you got that 2600lbs from considering the closest thing we have to an actual number is motortrends listing of 2850. I'm talking about it as actually being listed weight wise.

Hr sure isn't comparing apples to apples. Those cars aren't in the Sonics class and really mean nothing. Except that with a time the sonic will cream the focus

(I was wrong to claim the weight was from the GM website; sorry, I got carried away. All other specs are from mfg websites).

Here is what is happening: GM is down to the “short strokes” with Sonic. It is being tested at the EPA Emissions Lab for MPG rating. The MPG Sticker is a big selling point with some customers. If by taking-off a few pounds, GM can win a higher MPG from EPA, then the weight will be removed. So yes, yer correct there is no “official” weight, but all the auto mags, etc that have test driven Sonic are not dummies AND they talk to the GM engineers who stand-by during test drives.

As far as this discussion being relevant, the eye-opener for me is that Sonic is comparable in physical size to the muscle cars. Just drop a huge engine in it and add some braces across the front. Duhh.

Done? Done? Don't we have a Fat Lady on this Blog? We have to wait until she sings! Speaking of "wait" and "weight" (as in "fat" lady), I thought the topic would engender more discussion in that we have preconceived ideas of what is "small" and what is "standard size." When you run the numbers Sonic is not any smaller than cars we think of as "standard size." Hey maybe it's just me, but I urge yins to think outside the (econo)box.

Actually all of those cars, cya, corvette,camaro, BMW are all a LOT bigger than the sonic. Numbers don't tell the whole story. In reality, if those cars had as much steel on them as the sonic as far as the amount per body then those cars would weigh a lot more than they do now. They use different materials ie. Carbon fiber etc to reduce the weight of the car to increase performance.

If the sonic used he same materials the Corvette did then it would weigh at least 120lbs less than it already does.

Those cars are also longer, leaner , and employ a lot more than just a bigger engine and bracing to achieve the numbers they do.

Just curious! Why are you comparing the Chevy Sonic with the Ford Focus? You obviously know the Focus is larger, a different class, etc.

Why not do a comparison to the Ford Fiesta, etc.?

I don't see the benefit of comparing autos in entirely differing classes.

I mean, it's alright to do so, obviously. Just wondering about your main objective, and what's to gain by doing so.

I don't know the OP's take on this, but for me, if the Sonic did not exist, I would be buying a Focus Hatch. I feel the Focus Hatch is the best in it's class and the Sonic is the best in its class. At 6'-2", the Sonic actually fits me, drives great, and is nice inside. No other "microcompact" can compete with the Focus, but the Sonic does (for my needs, anyway).
I sat in a Fit and it didn't!
