In the Sonics instance the closest I can come to is the GTI... each iteration is an improvement...

I would have to disagree with you on that one. Contrary to popular belief, the GTI did NOT improve over time. Technology may have gone further with new electronics, but that's about where the improvement stops. As far as economy and fun to drive factor, I'll take a 1st or 2nd gen over the latest and so called greatest heavy bulky slush box it has become.
