Stabilitrak Light Comes On And Stays On?

Has anyone had this happen to their Sonic?

I will be driving in normal conditions and all of a sudden, the stabilitrak light comes on and stays on (its the car with the little zig zag marks under it). I looked in the manual and it says to shut the car off and restart in 15 seconds. When i do that, the light is off, however it comes back on every few drives just randomly. It doesnt seem to do it in any particular condition, etc.

Here is a wonderful photo of the light that annoys me (ignore the dust, we have been using my sonic to move some things to our new place...man it can carry a LOT for being so small!....and ignore that its sideways...im too lazy to fix it)

I am taking it to the dealer on Friday for them to look. The dude said it may just need to be reset. The car doesnt drive differently, but man, i just hate that annoying light!

The ABS light does not come on at the same time?

The first thing I would check is that the TC button (in the center console by the cup holders) isn't getting stuck in the 'on' position or that nothing is resting on it.

Assuming your 6-month OnStar trial is still in effect, hit the blue button and ask them to run a diagnostic and see whether it is showing up and needs service attention. (Although I tend to agree that you should clear the tunnel so something isn't messing with the TC on/off button.)

At the dealership right now. Will see what they say. I've never touched any of the tc buttons or anything. It doesn't come on in consistent conditions...it could be rainy, it could be dry, it could be bumpy or smooth. No consistency at all.

lots of sensors in there for stability control. not sure where the sonic keeps its yaw contol or the module but you may have nudged it or knocked a plug loose moving some stuff. Most are in the trunk.

Intermittent stuff can be tricky to solve, but there's not a whole lot to this one since your abs light doesn't come on.

i just noticed that my trunk is mis-alligned and that its scratched the he!! out of my rear bumper.
there gonna look at it tuesday and give me a rental car for as long as it takes to fix it. i like my dealer. lol

I have to take it back next week, when their service guy who has some more experience with Sonics can take a look at it. Everything came back clean. i figured i wouldnt get a more detailed answer, as it is a bit wonky when it goes on...so we will see what happens next time.. hahah

SSPeckwood: Sedan? If so, the trunk has to be adjusted at the delearship before delivery to the retail customer. It is listed in the PDI but apparently some techs do not realize this. What you are describing is the result of not doing the adjustment.

thats exactly what happened then. they never adjusted it. i'm going to keep a careful eye on them to fix it properly. btw, it is a sedan. lol.

other than that, no problems so far.

Laborsmith im takin my Sonic in this weekend for the same issue. Would you be able to explain how to adjust the trunk on the sedan just in case the dealer cant duplicate the problem so I can do it myself.

I also have this problem I have a 12, sonic 1.4 hatch and it comes on so random. And my 1.8 has a few miss alignment areas. The rear doors and all that.

Your concern is certainly justified in regards to these issues. Please consult a dealership to have them addressed. Keep us posted on the status and PM if necessary with your situation, contact info, and VIN#. I hope this is resolved quickly for you.

Hey SonicPA, had a question is your light coming on randomly then when you shut off your sonic it goes away until the next time. I've had the same exact problem. Took it to them they had it fixed, i just had to leave the car on. Ill post the error code and also the problem plus the fix. Mine was doing it as well. It stayed on until I shut it off.


Here's what the ticket said.
Car Runninh in drive traction light on, advise goes on and off unable to duplicate on Saturday.
Verified code (C0161) Internal Fault Brake Pedal Position Sensor
Installed new sensor and learned position.



After they fixed the problem it hasn't happened since. So try this one with them.
