strange noise while idling

sorry if this has been covered many times b4, i searched for a thread and came up empty . last night i was sitting in a drive thru waiting for my order when i noticed a sound from underneath the car (firewall driverside wheel area). the best way i can describe the noise is it sounded like a chain with too much slack spinning inside of a metal case . it only happens when im standing still with car in neutral . i dont think anything is broken with the car and im hoping it just a noise the car makes that im unfamiliar with. does anyone have the same noise im describing? i will be taking it in to the dealer for the first oil change in the next few days and will ask a tech about the noise.

Sometimes the clutch pedal pressed in (in neutral) can make it go away?

pull up to a wall again, with car warmed up. Window down, does the noise go away with the clutch pedal engaged?...

did what u said . i pushed in the clutch in and the noise goes away . let the clutch out and the noise comes back after 3-4 seconds while in neutral the whole time.

yeah, that's normal. It's the spinning clutch...thing.
I'm not sure if noise is from the clutch SPINNING or NOT SPINNING and just "rattling"

thanks . i was hoping it was just a new to me sound . im still getting used to all the noises , like the clunky transmission . if i hadn't driven my old mans vette i would swear there was something wrong. the transmissions in the vettes are clunky too , just not as noticeable cause its attached to a rocket lol.

I test drove a Vette (1986) which had a unique manual tranny. It had overdrives for 3-5 gear I believe. Hit a button on the shifter top and it'd drop out/in of the OD, effectively giving it more gears... was pretty cool

Thinking out loud here but could the noise come from worn dampening springs in the clutch? Or possibly a worn release bearing? I don't know a whole lot about the transmission, doing the best I can with what I know.

It sounds like a throw out bearing...

Kevjam is right. But, throwout bearings make noise, especially new ones. As long as it doesn't get any worse, I'd call it perfectly normal. I actually noticed it when I first got my car too. Mine got quite a bit quieter over the first 5000 miles or so. When I first got the car, I hated the clutch in it, but it has worn in now and feels like any clutch in any little FWD car I've ever driven. Give it a little time to seat in.

if this is sitting still with the clutch pushed in .... why are you doing this ?

if sitting for more than a sec of two, toss it into neutral and take foot off of clutch ... when ready to go again, push in clutch, select gear, and off you go ... MUCH less wear on clutch

Yeah, at idle in neutral, keep foot off clutch all together....

i dont ride the clutch if im in a gear , if im not moving im not in gear ever. i guess i didnt explain myself well enough . i was just trying to diagnose the noise i was hearing . i was in neutral the whole time when pushing in the clutch to see if the noise went away
