Any thoughts on transmission swaps from other cars?
I hear of people mating T5 transmissions, Toyota W58 transmissions, etc... with pretty much every (RWD/AWD) motor out there. haha
With that in mind, I wonder if we could source something remotely close for our FWD cars and then deal with fabbing the bellhousing adapter, mounts, shifter, and whatever else might be necessary. (I know I'm being super optimistic here in regards to budget, but you never know right?)
Hm, since we're on this topic, doesn't the Transformers Sonic have a 4G63 Evo swap in it or something like that?

Sounds to me like money better spent on a better platform that can handle more power right out of the box. Not to be a Debby Downer or anything.

New sidetrack.... My starter is acting up again. A couple months ago it would grind in the mornings. It was like the starter gear wasn't aligning, and would grind really loud. After about 3 attempts, it would finally start like normal.
At first I was worried it was an issue with the aftermarket flywheel teeth. But I roll bumped it to a different position and it didn't help. Then would suddenly work fine.
So...... a starter issue.
Then it kind of just went away after about a week. Well now it's back and it takes more like ten attempts before it works properly. And at 5am, I don't think my neighbors appreciate it.
Anyspray, I just ordered a new starter from GM. $232 facking dollars!
I'm gonna install it this weekend. :/ Little pricey if you ask me.

Yeah, but that truck is classic and badass. A Sonic is well...neither. And it's probably cheaper to swap your truck than it is to make a Sonic run 12's.

I swapped starters, in the pouring rain mind you, and I learned a couple things.
The stock one is Bosch 55578921, the replacement is Mitsubishi 55576954.:sadbanana:
They are slightly different. The mitsu has more teeth on the starter gear. Not a big issue right?
Well, let me rewind and mention what a pain it was to remove/install. At first it was going really smooth, and I was stoked it was only gonna be 10 minutes total.
Then came the upper mounting bolt. Can't see it from under the car, and can't reach my arm in past the Intake Mani to get to it from the top. Uggggh:blankface:
But I managed with a series of positions and different tools, and making sure I thoroughly soaked my self by rolling around in the rain under my car 20 times.
Well, once installed I give it a test. Starts beautifully!!! And just before I start to clean up my tools and dry off...... I decide I want to replicate the successful start one more time. Nerp!
The starter just makes a bucking motion and a repetitive clunk, but no turning, like it's locked up.
So i called GM and first expressed my unhappiness with a Mitsubishi starter, but they said after looking up both p/n's in the system, that the Mitsu has replaced the Bosch.
I checked my batt voltage and noticed it's 12.2V, kinda low..... So I'm charging it up right now. But I doubt that's it.
It seems, I'll have to put the Bosch back in and just chance it until I can find out WTF?

Well that de-escalated quickly.
I charged the battery for all of about 10 minutes at 2A, and it said it was full.
Starts up great now, and I repeated about 5 successful restarts. The good news is that I think it's fine now. The bad news is that I'll always wonder what happened when I first tested it and will live in paranoia that it'll happen again when I least expect it.:blank face:
And I'll repeat that I highly doubt it was low battery issues, but maybe the Braille's CCAs are getting less effective, so I guess it may be time to think about getting a back-up just in case.

From all of your informative posts, I'm sure you know what your doing. You probably did it but, I have to ask. Did you load test the battery? Like you said its possible the CCAs may be getting low and that would cause the charger to say the battery was fully charged even if it wasn't capable of putting out the full CAs.

I didn't do a load test. It seems odd to me that before I changed starters, I could crank it 10 different times before it would finally catch. And suddenly not work the new starter on attempt #2........ Same battery.
It seems fine now, which is really odd. But like I said, I'll probably just get a back-up Braille soon. I've pigeon-holed myself into needing a smaller battery, lest I want to re-relocate my coolant reservoir.
And as far as load testing, I don't have the equipment to do it. And what if I find out it is going bad? I'll just need another anyway. I'll just skip a step and have another ready for when it does go out. Batteries don't last forever. And the lead time on these Brailles is a couple weeks, so I'll be doing myself a favor by getting a spare proactively.

No batteries don't last forever. What type of Braille battery do you have? Is it a AGM or LiIon?
If its a AGM they have a shelf life. Once the acid is poured in the clock starts ticking. As far as testing equipment, you don't need expensive testing equipment for the occasional load test. You could pick up a cheap tester at just about any auto parts store for around $50.
I don't have much experience with LiIon batteries other than RC hobbies. So I can't give much advice on them other than don't let them discharge too much or you can kill a cell.

So it looks like the Braille is dropping voltage overnight. I had to charge it up again for the new starter to work.
I guess I'll have to put my stock 33lbs battery back in for the time being. It pisses me off that the new Mitsubishi replacement starter requires stronger voltage to operate.
I was looking at Braille's Li-ion options. Very intriguing. Ignoring the price, is there any reason this would be a bad idea. Say 900+ Pulse Cranking Amps.
