The Sonic is not a redesigned Aveo

Although the Sonic is the Aveo replacement in the Chevrolet line-up, it is not a redesigned Aveo.

The Aveo was built on a Daewoo platform (design) that GM purchase when it purchased with Daewoo Motors from a conglomerate in 2001. The Sonic is a completely new platform designed as joint venture by Opel (owned by GM) and Fiat. The Sonic (and in Australia, the Holden Baria) is the first car built on this new T300 platform. GM intends to use the T300 platform worldwide for all of its vehicles of similar size instead of maintaining several platforms of the same size. The Chevrolet Spark is built on a GM4200 platform that Opel has been using for several years.

For those of you who remember, the Ford Fairmont and the Ford Thunderbird used a common platform for a while. The Dodge Neon and the Chysler PT Cruiser are the same platform. The same platform means that they are essentially the same car with a different bodies. When a manufacturer touts an "All New" vehicle, it's supposed to be a new platform. A "New" vehicle, like the PT Cruiser is supposed to be an old platform with a new body. The "Redesigned" or "Re-engineered" vehicle is a vehicle redesign.

I don't say "redesign" when I explain what the Sonic is (I've been asked a LOT). I just say "It replaced that piece of crap Aveo."

Hey now, The Aveo wasn't really a piece of crap. In fact, it was my great experience with my 2005 Aveo LS and my 2008 Aveo LT that sealed the deal for me when it came time and I bought my Sonic. I didn't want any other car.
Aveo replacement, as you call it, so it is. But any Aveo owner will tell you that the Aveo was still a large part in the design of this car. That is not a bad thing.
To deny the Aveo's influence in the evolution leading to the Sonic would be simply laughable.
The Aveo got a bad name mainly from those who didn't understand that it was an economy car. No bones about it. Many people treated them like bic lighters, used them up then acted surprised when they finally gave out. But if you took care of your Aveo, as I did mine, almost militant maintenance exactly to, or better than the suggested in the owners manual, actually put decent gas in it, not the lowest octane crap at the corner store, and kept the car nice, it was an awesome little car.
I bought my 08 Aveo LT for 15,000, the dealership I traded it to, turned around and put it up Certified Used for 12,000. They said the car was in almost new condition. And I never had a single problem with it.

I'm just playin'. I've never driven one, let alone sat in one, and never even heard anything negative about them until I joined this forum. As far as I knew, it was a good car. Good to hear that was the case.

I was driving down to Bellingham today (from Vancouver) and just south of Lynden I had a guy pull up next to me in a minivan and motioned for me to roll down my window. I did and he yelled across, "Is that a Daewoo?"

I told him no, it's a Sonic. He was very impressed with the Turbo and wondered if the dealership nearby had any. I told him that I didn't see them when I drove by, but I said the car rocked and I loved it. If I hadn't been by myself I would have offered to pull over and let him have a look. It sounded to me like he was going to go hunting for one like, right now.

And I then smoked him off the line.... <3 my Sonic.

I've seen alot of Aveo's in my area the last couple of days. I can't say they look all that bad.

The taillights on the sedans look pretty cool.

T300 is the GMD code for Gamma II. The Sonic is a globally engineered car but GMD did the bulk. The Spark is also a Gamma II car.
