AT what point does an engine become a pig?

I would call my 4.3 a pig, but it is in a truck and therefore low economy is expected. If it was in a car it would be a pig. The 2.4L in my 98 Z24 is more than capable of pulling off high 30s. Not bad for a basic engine design from my the late 80s. The1.8 in my Sonic is by no means a pig.

His gets the same mileage with twice the HP and 6 times the torque and you throw a load on the hitch and it takes a lot of lbs to cause a drastic change. I think I would rather drive the diesel that is just as quick and probably quicker unloaded for 5-8 bucks more a fill up.

It's true... but I can fill up with 93 and get 44mpg again any time I want. I just have to give up 30+hp and my crazy desire to burn less fossil fuel while doing it.

I have a new year's resolution, I'm going to put some 93 in my tank until the roads stop being so slippery I'm reluctant to WOT.

If it stops snowing, all bets are off, of course.

My 83 3/4 ton Chevy truck gets 23 mpg on the highway with a 250ci I-6 and a rodchester vari-jet 2 barrel carb. It's also a 4 speed with 4.10 gears.
My Harley at best gets around 32 mpg. It's not built for economy though.

My sonic is averaging 37 right now. I like speed and long warm ups.

We have a family member that had like a 62(?) Chevy with the 250 in it and it has the eco jets in it and it to gets 20-21

My old 77 GMC that had a 350ci and a Quadra-jet would get 21 on the highway loaded or unloaded. It was weird
I'm not impressed by new fuel injected trucks.
A customer of mine up the street actually was a engineer for Ford in the sixties thru the mid eighties. He helped design variable venturie carbs and fuel injection. Needless to say. He won't own fuel injected vehicles.

Before the Sonic I had a 2012 Ram Express with the 5.3 Hemi. It had the feature that would switch to 4 cyl on the hwy. I still only got 16-20 mpg average. That thing was a beast though.

Fuel injection could be more efficient than it is if it were not for the emissions requirements.
