Ticking sound when idling?

Ok, this may be really dumb especially since I've had the car for 55,000 miles.

What's this sticking sound I hear only when idling? Engine RPM does not effect it but if you hit the gas the sound completely stops and then starts up again back near idle.

I'm assuming it's some sort of PCV system because that's what it reminds me of, but it's strange. I'm assuming I never noticed it because I always have music on.

Yeah, that is kinda loud, can you tell at all where it might be coming from? Passenger side, driver side, front or back?

No not at all, other than rear-ish seemed like.


The speed of the ticking doesn't seem to go with the engine rpm and it disappears completely just above idling.

Any time I've had a valve tap it of course varies with engine RPM, this doesn't seem to.

While I thought the same thing, injectors wouldn't suddenly become silent above an idle.

So, with my music off this morning I paid very close attention.

I don't think it does it cold.
RPM doesn't seem to effect it, or at least not near as much as throttle.
Under slight load it gets slightly louder, under a little more load it goes away completely.
Engine braking it goes away completely.
All of this was done around 1500-2000rpm.

Find your purge solenoid and see if it is loose or just noisy. HAven't heard one that noisy in 15 or so years, but if it doesn't match RPM, that's the only thing I can think of.

its hard to say with the video it could be amplifying the sound.More or less these engines do sound a little ticky at idle.I have had several with customer complaints for the noise.But bottom line they sound the same as mine and there is nothing wrong for sure !

Hmm, my purge solenoid is ticking on the back of my engine bay. It's extremely loud and vibrates to the touch. Will try to reset my tune back to stock tomorrow and reload my tune. Hopefully it's something related to the tune. Or grounds, have a few extra things grounded to the frame and need to get better grounds.

Other than that, is there any way to test a faulty purge solenoid?

I left mine alone and ignored the ticking.
A few months back my EGR check valve failed in the intake and the dealer replaced the intake under warranty, which just happens to come with a new purge solenoid.

If that didn't happen, I'd still be ticking.

Hopefully it'll fail under warranty then, the car still has 40k miles to go before hitting 100k. It was ticking all day yesterday each time on startup. Today, so far so good. It's odd.

Mine only did because it just happened to come with the new intake which did fall under warranty.

The solenoid can be bought from rockauto for something like $20 and it looked awfully easy to swap out.

Also like I said, I ignored mine, it seemed to be working fine.

Yes it looks easy enough to swap. If it continues I'll order one from rockauto.

Do you mean the evap purge solenoid? It's pretty much on the very top of the engine bay at the very back, toward your firewall. There's wires leading to it and it should be connected to the intake by a plastic hose. It may have a red clip on it, at least mine does.

I was worried about my engine because it makes a noise like that but not as loud. The video makes it sound metal to metal, like valves are ticking. I bought my car from a dealer at 12,000 miles and it was listed previously as a rental car. I'm concerned that a turbo rental would get abused at every stop light and freeway stretch.

There are bits of cured epoxy splattered on the seats, dash, and side panels too but that's a different matter.

Anyways I was thinking of getting one of those stethoscope looking probes and listening directly to the solenoid and head to see which makes the noise. Maybe the crank/block area as well. If it was N/A I would have no qualms about taking off any ol vacuum line and applying hand vacuum to valves/solenoids to test their operation. Since it's turbo I dunno what I can remove safely as I'm unsure of the consequences.

I have the same noise. I posted a thread about it someplace on here. I was told it was the injectors
