To: GM/Sonic Engineers:NAV System Question...

I have heard through various sources that the Sonic has been originally designed to have an optional Navigation screen available (like the one for the 2012 Cruze) as an option, but it was decided not to include it for the 2012 MY due to costs.

Can anyone involved with the Sonic confirm this?
And if so, if GM decides to offer this as an option for the 2013 MY, could it be conceivable to "grandfather" it in to a 2012 MY if a person wanted it?

I ask because of OnStar. An aftermarket TomTom or Garmin nav system would be a fine alternative, but to have a navigational map integrated with OnStar would be a more desirable solution. It may cost more, but I would prefer it over the "Turn-by-Turn" that's the only nav option available for the Sonic.

Well, I don't know if I would want to pay GM's prices for GM-branded factory navigation... unless you like to pay approaching or over $2000.00 for a navi system. Personally, I'd rather go aftermarket and get more features and versatility.

But if you'll look at the Sonic's dash really well, especially the LT and LTZ, I'll bet it's going to be extremely difficult getting anyone to offer aftermarket provisions for an audio/navi system. Seriously, look at the huge amount of center dash/console that would have to be replaced and re-engineered in order to swap for an aftermarket navigation/audio unit.

I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but it's doesn't look as if it will be all that easy or cost effective for any manufacturer to offer, or for an owner to purchase any kind of aftermarket unit for this ride.

Again, I hope I'm wrong. Although, and on that note, when companies want to sell something, I suppose where there's a will, someone always finds a reasonable way!

Beginning for the 2012 MY, GM slashed their price on the screen based nav systems from $2,000 to $999. That makes a screen based nav with OnStar more appealing and affordable for me.

Also, I'm guessing if GM offered it on the LTZ in 2013, the top part above the current center might be able to support a screen based nav system. It might be similar to the small screen on the 2010 Aveo Concept RS interior.

The other option might be to move the center interior vents out to where the two empty pockets are, thereby freeing that space for a nav screen (this is shown on the 2012 Cruze)

At any rate, I'll be curious to see if GM does implement this for the 2013 MY Sonic.
