Transmission Popping Out Of Second Gear

Today, my car started popping out of second gear. Every time I put it in second, it would pop out almost immediately. I took my car to the dealership a few hours ago and they won't be able to look at it until tomorrow or maybe the following day. I'm only at 27k miles and the car is just over 2 years old. I'm worried I need a new transmission put in...

Either a fork tip failed or a synch ring is toast. Replacing the trans is the only solution, aside from tracking down the parts (not purchasable from GM) and rebuilding it.

That's what I was afraid of...Do you happen to know how long it would take to replace that or the cause of a problem such as that?

They should give you a loaner car to drive in the meantime. Length of replacement depends on how soon they can get a new trans in.

Yeah, they gave me a Buick Encore and I don't much care for it.

You're lucky that you reached 27k. I am only at 16,500 and just over a yr old.

I doubt it. I hope so though. The "tech" who drove it to see if it was popping out of gear stalled it 3 times. I almost called my mom to come teach him how to drive.

I saw your topic, but from what I read, I didn't really understand the solution to your problem.
It sucks...

well, to cut a long story short. My faulty master cylinder leaked out all of the fluid. Due to a loss of hydraulic pressure, this caused my clutch to fail. This catastrophic event wrecked my transmission and popped it into neutral. The final event occurred while I was accelerating in 3rd gear, so perhaps that's when the gear failed simultaneously with the clutch.

I have to take the car to my local dealership now because when I use the new clutch and shift into 3rd, it grinds at less than 3000 RPM. The manager who I spoke to at the previous dealership said that the transmission will need to be replaced. Unlike your car, when I get into 3rd, it will stay in gear and not pop into neutral.

UPDATE:
I picked it up today and they had to put a new transmission in it. They also replaced the clutch fluid and fixed my camber.

I've been out of town since I picked it back up and it won't go into first gear unless I go from second to first. It's like the gate is still up for first. Did they install the transmission wrong, or?

That sounds like a clutch issue.

Try with the engine off... press clutch in and try to get into first. If it goes in easily when the engine is off, but not when running, then the clutch is not fully releasing from the flywheel.

Also, try pumping the clutch pedal a bunch of times and see if it goes into first a little easier.

Could just need to bleed the hydraulic clutch line.

It wouldn't go into first while off, so I tried pumping the clutch for a bit and it still wouldn't go into first. :sadbanana:

If not, then it might be a shifter cable issue. But, regardless, the shop that installed the transmission should fix it at no charge or inconvenience to you.

Nope. The only way is to go from second to first quickly whether I'm stopped or moving.
I'm taking it back on Thursday.

It does sound like the clutch. But if it's shifting into the other gears then maybe it's not the clutch. I had that "gate" symptom on mine when my clutch and master cylinder were completely gone. As though something was stopping the stick. But that was with all of the gears. Have them check the hydraulic pressure.
