I won't try to talk you out it... but I'm betting your stock intake parts (throttle body, manifold, port design) will become the restriction when you try to move a higher volume of air at 20psi. And if you clear that restriction the stock fuel pump may have trouble supporting your newfound airflow at high RPM (even with larger injectors).

Also remember that when the intake requirements of the larger compressor exceed the output capacity of the smaller compressor (at high rpm) the smaller compressor will cavitate. So you better have a mechanism to suppliment the intake of the larger compressor once it is spooled.

I wish you luck but be ready to spend more than $1500.

if you guys are seriously looking at some turbo options why don't you talk to a someone at Forced Performance. theres so many different options with turbos, like different compressor wheels, bearing setups, hot/cold side combos. IMO a compound turbo setup is waste of money on our platform. a decent 16g MHI style turbo, with a billet wheel would spool up like a stock turbo and flow way more air. anyone ever heard of an 68HTA, fab one of those up on a Sonic and thank me later.

You are aware the bigger compressor feeds in to the smaller compressor, right?

There's no doubt the small ports are a restriction. Good thing about that is its a flow restriction and not a pressure restriction and compound setups don't flow more, but instead operate at higher pressure.

I run 23psi and make under 200whp at the moment.

So mid 25s. Still doesn't change the fact that you gain the to end if a bigger charger without sacrificing spool and running way out of the compressor efficiency range like you have.

At what rpm are you seeing that 23 psi fall off at?

Torque jumps up at 2500rpm and the HP peaks around 5000rpm on a Trifecta tuned Sonic. Between there is the usable powerband. The gears are such that if you shift after you reach peak HP it will drop you into the midst of your peak torque.

And the 23psi holds fairly steady through that range... depending on the temp.

For the money you will spend on that setup you could bore and stroke the 1.4t then port it well enough to spool a Garrett T3 around 2000rpm and support over 300whp. Which is far more power than then existing clutch, trans, and axles will ever be able to handle.

My 28 year old 8 valve 2.2 liter spools a Super60 under 2000rpm and pulls like a Boeing jet to 6000rpm. I'm sure the Sonic's head would flow even better.

Jet engines don't produce crap until the plane is moving pretty good. However I do have to ask, how exactly does a Boeing jet pull?

And that older post is the most relevant. A DBB Garrett T3 (or equivelant) would be the cheapest, easiest, and most reliable way to hit 300hp and provide strong top end performance on a Sonic. And it would still spool more than early enough.

If you like waiting until 4 grand for spool up, sure. Its almost half the displacement of your 2.2. Vw1.8ts with the t25 gt28rs still don't spool up until after 3000 rpm.

You're talking about a t3 housing on a 1.4l.

The ideal single turbo for this motor is going to be the 19t compressor wheel strapped to a twin scroll non-hl td04. That is also in the works.
