What is this in my 1.4L intake housing?

Drove thru some deep water last night along I-40. Thought I'd check the inside of my air intake as a precaution. Water was inside the housing and the filter was damp.

Anyone know what this white looking filter is on the inside of the intake? Looks like maybe its a charcoal filter to dry out water that gets past the air filter?

Its for hydrocarbons, it absorbs anything so like from when you are sitting in traffic you dont get any "dirty" air going into your engine

You're 1/2 half correct.

It does absorb hydrocarbons, but it is used to catch fumes coming out of the intake for evaporative emission testing. Since hydrocarbons are heavier than air, they'll exit the airbox snorkel and be released into the atmosphere, where they will pollute the environment...

The little carbon maxipad catches these hydrocarbons and holds them until the engine is running, then the air drawn through the airbox sucks the vapors out of the carbon to be burned in the engine.

You can thank the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for little things like that. :sadbanana:

no kidding. everything from weird to stupid...and that includes crazy and completely not necessary
