It may be light compared to most other cars on the road but both the sedan and hatch are among the heaviest in the sub-compact class. I've been a car enthusiast for almost 40 years and I've owned nothing but small cars, and the Sonic is the heaviest car I've ever owned. My last 2 cars were an Acura RSX and before that an Integra, and although not by much, the Sonic is heavier than either one of those. Probably due to 10 airbags and loads of other safety crap.

The 2016 Sonic sedan weighs 2733 pounds. The 2006 RSX and Integra weigh 2790 pounds (without having 10 airbags and loads of safety crap...
The replacement for the RSX is the ILX which weighs 3093 pounds.

No doubt by 2006 the RSX put on more weight. Mine was a 2002 and according to the brochure and manual, it weighs 2,639 lbs. It had only 4 airbags and mine had no sunroof, ABS or cruise, but it is a little bigger than the Sonic and has a 2 liter motor. As I said, the Sonic is the heaviest car I've ever owned.
By the way, I don't consider the Acura 1LX to be a replacement for the RSX. The RSX was exclusively a 2 door coupe with a hatch. Maybe the 1LX is a replacement for the CSX, I don't know.

Ahh, but I don't believe that the Americans have had the CSX! They might not know what it is.
Its pretty much a Honda Civic with an Acura badge and luxury leather seats.

Ah yes, you might be right about that, and also the US never got the version of RSX that I had which is the lightest version in North America, so their RSX weights would show a little higher.
Perhaps the 1LX is a replacement for the TSX which may be more similar.

By 20-30 year ago standards the SOnic might be heavy, but compared to modern standards its not doing too shabby. The steel needed to create crash structures that will perform appropriately is rather heavy. Add in all the other safety related things and it adds up real quick. I am actually a little surprised the Sonic came in under 3000 pounds.

Also gotta remember too that I think the sonic and spark are their first big efforts to get in the sub compact game. Once they do a redesign they will probably find some weight to cut so they get the mpg up.
When they mostly made Malibus, impalas and trucks(yes I know they made some compacts), they are going to have some growing pains.
