Wideband Oxygen Sensor

Has anyone on here successfully replaced the narrowband for a wideband?

My car is currently running in open loop since the ecu is not accepting the narrowband voltage output from the wideband, in fact it is actually only reporting an error voltage.

The good news is my tune typically runs arouund 14.4-15.2 which isn't bad. But can Vince getting any useful information without having any fuel trims from closed loop

What wideband controller did you get?

The ECU should be able to read the 5v signal from a controller that converts it to narrowband.

Vince can still get useful info for the power end of your tune without closed-loop fuel trims. But it may be hard for him to fine tune economy and low throttle response.

Since I built my new downpipe, I have no need for my rear O2 sensor; I'm looking for the proper connector so I can read a wideband into my post cat O2 circuit. It should work and then I can leave the main O2 sensor alone.

having a wideband so far done the line won't be getting an accurate reading.. I have mine at the first bung..

thats wierd maybe you have it on the wrong wire??
I am using a innovative wideband and have it wired on the narrow to the ecu and it seems to be getting a signal..

I have sent in two logs and trifecta didnt say anything about it so i assume its receiving a signal

Did you ever get any codes when you hooked it up?
What exactly did you do to install it?

yes several codes but all pertaining on o2 heater voltage or heater not working.. When i reflashed i made sure i checked those so i have no codes now..

as for exactly how its installed. i would have to look at it.. I am on the road right now and won't be home till this weekend some time.. if you haven't figured it out by then i will check and see exactly how i wired mine in.

You're doing it wrong. You won't notice the inherent lag in wide band signal, but I will guarantee that changing the location of your switching sensor will cause errors in your closed loop fuel control.

The PLX gauge has a seperate narrowband output to keep the stock ECU happy.

We've seen those work correctly one out of five times, so we found other ways to monitor a/f in cars we can't cut into.

My primary o2 is running where the emissions one was, I plan on getting a wide band and welding in a new bung.

Okay, I'm fairly sure that the wideband is feeding it positive signal into the signal ground :blankface:

I was following the diagram from scot and now that I look at the diagram it seems like there is a ground at both sides of the sensor. I'm not sure how to read it but I'm going to guess that I'm feeding the signal into the signal ground. Once I'm home I'll see if switching it will make it all work.

If I find the wires for sure and get it working, I'll post what I used on here for everyone in the future.

i pulled my ground right off the engine block.. on the left side right under the valve cover there is already a bolt with a wire on it..

5290 is heater +12V
3113/5035 are heater grounds
1664/1669 are signal grounds
1665/1668 are signal inputs from the narrowband

If you go about the install like me and cut the stock narrowband, the wires that you need are easier to find.

1. you don't need to undo the tiny plastic elbow to figure out which pins are which wire colours.
2. there are three wire colours you will encounter with the factory narrowband. Two white, one grey and one white.
3. the white you need for 12v power when the igntion is on is at the outside of the connector(if you dont connect it to the right one, your wideband won't turn on and you switch which white wire)
4. the wire you need to give a simulated narrowband signal is the black wire.

Hopefully my mistakes will help someone else make a smooth and seamless installation.

A few guys are doing it right.

Weld or have a bung welded for your wideband. Get a plug for when you're not using it or when you sell the car. This thread was hard for me to read.


If you're going through with this effort I'd suggest to use an NGK powerdex AFX. I believe they've been discontinued but you can find left over new suppliers or find em on ebay used.

Or Ballenger's sells them as the AFR500 (rebranded). http://www.bmotorsports.com/shop/

Upgrade the AFX an NTK sensor. This is the most bang for your buck in aftermarket accuracy, the range remains the same as the AFX. Ballingers also has them for sale.

If you're just using this for tuning and not a gauge, you can have ECM reflash the AFX to show lambda and make life easier when tuning. I don't think for our application it's needed to splurge for something like ECM's (of lambdaCAN) AFR1000.


A bung per manifold cylinder would be pretty cool to see and wonderfully excessive, though I don't know how accurate the reads would be before the turbo, need to measure pressure and post process and convert to new AFR. Could monitor output of each cylinder directly with something like an AEM 4-channel UEGO instead of monitoring fuel trims and doing manual engine compression checks to determine the health of the cylinders. But that's as far as tuning would go with it unless you moved to a CAN based system. Well out of sonic mod$ range. But you could pop your hood next to a Ferrari owner at a show and annoy them with your similar wideband setup. :banana:

You can measure individual exhaust temp of each cylinder and then measure the overall AFR.

Then you can get close to the same information that you are looking for. Leaner cylinders should be hotter.

The individual temps will also help with detecting a misfire.

I hadn't thought of that before. Some diesels run a EGT per bank, but maybe someone with pyrometer experience could say if it'd be accurate enough to measure per cylinder on a small manifold. I'd like to look into that. Good idea though, and much cheaper/easier maintenance and calibration than widebands.

Which brings another question, what is the best EGT pyrometer with analog output for the money?
