Will the Fiesta ST arrival hurt Sonic RS sales?

Most of the top times have associated build threads, you can look and see how many mods were on the car when the time was posted.

That thread you linked means nothing. 90% of those cars are not just tuned. He asked what will be quicker the ST or a tuned Sonic. It's an easy answer the ST will be quicker.

Going off Trifecta's dyno chart with just a tune the Sonic makes (IIRC) 154/194 to the wheels.

The ST is rated ~190/200 IMO it will put down more HP to the wheels than the Sonic with ease. Once tuning is available it won't even be a fair comparison.

I admit a stock ST will probably end up with a bit more whp (maybe ~167) and should be a bit lighter but will also be putting out a bit less torque. Again, in the real world of two lane passing and general 'fun' driving, I don't think the difference will be that significant.

I answered his question appropriately, then added that after the fact because the ST's potential is much higher. You didn't answer his question appropriately and supplied him with a thread with 1/4 mile times from cars heavily modified beyond just a tune.

First, I don't see anything bad about the little Fiesta ST if you want to get a bare bones performance car...but I would only buy the base level ST with no options to it (no nav, no Recaro's)...because otherwise you're spending too much.

I priced out a Fiesta ST with 17" Gray Premium wheels ($375) and Recaro's ($1995)...total of the car was $24,565. Doesn't seem too bad, but when you consider you can just get the Focus ST2 with partial leather Recaro's for $26,880...why not spend the extra $2k for the extra space and larger engine...you can shave some weight if you really want to from it...not to mention as the phrase goes...there's no replacement for displacement and the 0.4 liters makes enough difference when you're talking turbo.

what gets me the most is the same issue with the Abarth 500. sure, it's quicker, but would you buy one? I've sat in a Fiesta, and I would not buy one.

Yeah the $2000 Recaro option is overpriced. it's only$1500 on the Mustang and $2400 on the focus St but it also comes with a bunch of other stuff like larger touch screen and Sony stereo

I just don't like the way Ford does the packages...on the Focus...wish you could do a la carte....you have to get the ST3 to be able to get HID's...it's half-assed if you ask me.

I think the Recaro's would make a difference, but they sure as **** aren't worth the money that Ford is charging.

Seriously though, for what it's got my car feels pretty fast stock (I always mash around here in the back roads hella late at night after work), I think it would be a close race & who knows, maybe I just might even win lol! Sh*t to tell you the truth, a modded & tuned Sonic would probably kill a ****ing Fiesta. I don't like or trust anything Ford (my preference), but something tells me the 1.4T Ecotec is much stronger.

I ain't trying to badmouth a Fiesta, but to me it looks way too round (eggy) & narrow (skinny). I think all that black plastic in the grill (mouth) is closed off too, how stupid (at least the Focus is). The wheels look too small too, & I bet the interior is tiny also, again not for me. The Sonic fits me perfectly, it looks just as good as it drives, I'm very pleased so far!

Except they're charging $2000... But I still think it's a fair price. Recaros with airbags are expensive.

Also every manufacturer pairs options with packages. You need the LT to get the turbo, right?

I still see no issue with that price. If you wanted to add that caliber of a seat at a later date it would cost at least that.

Lol. Oops. It should have been cheaper because of the price of Recaro options on other Ford cars, but if you compare it to buying Recaro seats aftermarket then it's a fair price.

A little over a week ago I went to the GM Tech Center in Warren Michigan for a RDS (Ride and Drive Study) program. I was paid to drive a car around for 40 minutes or so and give feedback on pros and cons. I was not fortunate enough to drive the only Sonic RS they had in the study, but the retired engineer that was riding with me said and i Quote "Its fast as $hit". It was an RS with a different engine in it with a lot more power. I cant remember what little they knew about it, but i think it was a 2.0L probably what was in the old Cobalt SS with 260hp. I really wanted to drive it, but then again if I did my 1.4t wouldn't be the same. Instead I got to race around a bone stock Chevy Spark. When I got back into my Sonic the clutch felt kinda heavy and felt faster. Hope this info makes somebody's day better knowing a fast Sonic is out there being tested by GM.

i thought the cobalt ss motor was retired for the new 2.0t that's in the ATS and regal etc.

I suspect that is the new 1.6 turbo that just went into production inEurope December and Chevy has already announced would go into the Sonic. If I recall correctly it is around 190HP in present form, I expect it will be around 200HP when it comes to the US.

Congrats on the opportunity, I too would jump at the chance to do one of those.
