Worried about new paint process?

I think the biggest factor to these paint issues is the environment, where and how you drive.

My wife has a long commute but it is at relatively low speeds and on clean roads. Our 2013 Sonic is at about 20k miles and the front still looks brand new. The whole car still looks new. It is garaged at home and she parks in a covered garage at work too.

She drove our Mazda5 primarily before that and the front of it looked flawless until I took over primary duties on it. Now after nearly 50k highway miles blasting all over the southeast at 75+ MPH (Florida, Georgia, Carolinas, Virginias, Tennessee, Bama, Kentucky, Mississippi and LA) the front can definitely use a re-coat.

I find truth in your post in that I have no paint problems on 20K miles on my 2013 RS. In recent years my driving pattern has changed: I have no depth perception so drive with more caution (slower) than I used to AND I drive with a much greater cushion between me and the vehicle ahead of me.

So my question is it seem cheap cars from multiple brands have this same problem. Does a Caddy or a Vette have paint problems like this? How about a Acura TL or MDX?

My guess is a $40-60k car will have far better paint than a $16-18k one.

Negative. GM pick up trucks with sticker prices close to $ 50k have the same crappy paint job. There are a lot of complaints about this on the forums.

I just did a quick search/review on the MDX and I am well acquainted with Corvette forum posts and my conclusion is yes, $50-$60 vehicles seem to present with paint problems.

There used to be a solution: a complete repaint using lacquer instead of water based paints. That solution would also take away the orange peel that comes with modern vehicle paint processes. I understand it is difficult to find shops able to do this but as I have not tried to I can not say if that is true.

I think this new paint process is a joke. I havent even had this car a full 2 years yet and i have already discovered that my Driver side Rear door had lost some paint and is now Rusting... Yes, has Rust Forming on it! For me that is just unexceptable for a vehicle that is not even 2 years old yet owned. Looked around the car and have found several other areas of paint missing and will likely now have to contiplate Getting a loan to have this car completely repainted with a more Quality thicker paint job. Not something i should have to even think about until at least 8-10 years into owning the car. Budget Economy car or not.

I would not look under your car either. If it's a black piece of suspension. It will more then likely have surface rust already
