Your first turbo car

First turbo car was a 91 civic SI with a drag turbo kit on turboedit I've had others since but that one was my first car
Wasn't the first popular turbo car in America a Mustang (2.3 liter?) back in the 1980s? Turbo diesels came out about the same time, I think. Anyway I thought of getting a turbo Mustang but I feared the engine would not bear the added power very well, resulting in serious problems before long.
My Sonic is the first turbo car in my family. I figured after 30 years car manufacturers have figured out how to make a durable turbocharged engine. And I like the little 1.4 liter turbo, much more than I thought I would. So much so that I would probably prefer a turbo for my next vehicle.

This is my first. Although, I'm pretty sure that the turbo will be the part that fails first. It seems that we are starting to see wear on some of the higher mileage cars already. But frankly, for what a new one costs, I'm not too concerned. In all EJ25 Subarus, you can plan on head gaskets by 150k miles. On this car, I will replace the turbo by then. I just consider it a 100k mile wearable item. The fun it adds to the car makes it worth it.

I've driven a couple of these and yes, you are not wrong.
The first turbo car I actually owned myself was an '03 SRT-4 that I bought new. That was also very fun.

That car was definitely crazy fun but was the only Mopar I've owned so I'm probably not much of a Mopar guy. Actually the Sonic is the first new GM car I've bought new also (not counting Geo), although I have owned a couple used ones.
I've always considered myself more of a Ford guy honestly, but I think I'm really just an all around car guy since there are cars from all the manufacturers that I would LOVE to own

Oldsmobile had a Turbo option on the '62 Jetfire and Chevy had it on the Corvair Monza Spyder.
Next up for the U.S. was the Buick V6 in 1978.
Mustang joined the party in 1979. I wouldn't say the Mustang Turbo was any more popular than the Jetfire, the Corvair or the Buick.
I can say if ever an engine needed a turbo - it was that 2.3L Ford.
Well the Mustang 2.3L turbo was the first I remember being heavily advertised and reviewed in automotive journals. Yeah, this doesn't mean it sold well. Not sure if prospective buyers back then were really interested in having a Pinto engine in their Mustang, even if turbocharged.
But roll forward 30 years and turbocharging has gone mainstream. What was considered exotic and the domain of "speed demons" can be found cars one's mother would drive.

My first turbo car was a 1982 Fiat Spyder 2000, turbo. I think it had about 100 raging HP but still a fun little car. That was 27 years ago. Was the same color and wheel combo as the one below but mine had the optional luggage rack on the decklid.
My first turbo car was a. 1989 Merkur XR4Ti. Same 2.3L turbo motor as the Mustang SVO and Thunderbird TurboCoupe. I also had a 1993 Ford Thunderbird SC, which has a supercharged 3.8L V6. Both were a blast to drive but unfortunately they were both pretty rough around the edges. Now I have the Cruze Eco and the Sonic LT, both turbocharged. [emoji1]
