I hope there is a magnetic something in them to collect metal chips

Yes there is a magnetic piece in the trans to pick up metal chips....
Also this transmission is notorious for having bearing failure in the Vauxhauls in the UK. That is why it is only rated at 236lbft of torque..... I took my trans out to put a SPEC stage 2 + clutch in my cruze and opened it up to see if the bearings were the same as in the old 2000's Vauxhauls that were having bearing failure. I think they changed the company from timkin to SNR. Cause i know they use NTN-SNR Bearings now... but i still would not trust this gearbox enough to not put a thicker gearbox fluid in... Especially if there is still premature wear on the bearings. If this is still an issue that has not been resolved i would rather spend a little more and be proactive rather than reactive.... Oh and good luck purchasing a bearing for this transmission in the U.S. No one has them. Its a UK only item right now. I made the mistake of taking my upper mainshaft bearing off to try researching who the manufacturer was and if it has more structural integrity...And curiosity but me in the butt. Its been 2 weeks i have been waiting on this bearing from overseas.
Just food for thought.
I'd look at your tranny and see I you could find a filler hole.
a couple oil changes would be fine. but as far as long term. it could be problematic. the newer man-tran are not like the older ones. they are extremely over engineered
There is a 100K 5 year warranty covering the trans. Do you feel thinner oil is going to make the trans fail before the warranty is out? And if so, why change it? Whos to say the thicker oil won't make it last 10K past the warranty rather than have it fail just before?
Over engineered as in not as simple as the older ones
Manual transmissions are a niche market. . . .
I agree that it is more alive in other parts of the world, but from what I've read over the last few years the percentages of manual transmissions are declining in those parts also.
Manual transmissions are a niche market, I highly doubt ANY manufacturer is spending time and money over-engineering their manual transmissions.
With the amount of miles he drives he may want to keep the vehicle for more than three years and is trying to maintain it properly so the transmission continues to function after the warranty is expired.
Well, I am over 63,000 miles and still sounds and runs great! Think I have that sway bar bushing problem starting but going to have that checked by new dealership in a few weeks. I am looking at just changing gear oil at every 15-20,000 miles to play it safe. Still no GM release of oil specs so no place is making a equal or better oil, so we are stuck with this gear oil for now. I did learn that if you go with any other gear oil you do chance burning up the synchronizers and the stablizing system and traction control will respond differently if at all. Hearing that the bearings have been changed to a different brand is good news. I have full intent to run this car into the ground if possible. I want to see 500k before that happens and at current rate of 80k a year I have a little over 4 years to go. I will update around 100k. This I did notice that at around 57 degree F, my mpg starts dropping and stops at a 7-8 mpg drop around 32 degrees and below. Car needs a better front clip to cut that cold air.
