6T40 to 6T45 Transmission Swap

Ok, so I got an email back from ZZP and here is pretty much what they said.

"We would need to know if there are different versions of the transmission.
We would need to tear one down and develop parts to upgrade it.

I spoke with our transmission guy. He had nothing good to say.
In fact he rambled for so long on all the deficiencies of the transmission, I could even write them all down.
He said the 6t40 is a smaller version of the 6t70 and no parts interchange. He said, even the 70 is “piece of crap” and won’t hold power.
Stated that you’re lucky to get 100k miles out of either and told me to give up on making them stronger. The list of things that breaks is too long, there is no room inside to change or upgrade parts and he won’t warranty builds he does.

Sorry but it’s all bad news from him.

Well regardless of what he said the issue is still here and it needs to be resolved. I feel zzp is the best option because of there background.

oh yeah I definitely agree with you there. I also found out the transmission shops around me aren't will to work on the transmission since they only do repairs nothing performance related. the closest place I can think of that has such a place is in Chicago. Not sure if i'm willing to drive 2 hours into a gridlocked city during rush hour. An alternate route is to go to the 6t45 or figure out how to do a manual transmission swap over to a stronger rebuilt MZ0. At that point it's just better to trade the car in then having to swap out the ECU, Speedo/tac , with the transmission and then find a way to make it work with the cars VIN cause of the VIN match BS.
To my understanding though is the Manuals don't have a TCM and are purely mechanical. If someone can confirm this, that would be a big help. If I am incorrect in anything I say feel free to correct me.

There are a few things that can happen. We could try and find a way to build out the 6t45 transmission and swap it for our 6t40 since someone pointed out the pinout's and electronics are the same as ours, or we can end the build at 200hp and 205ftlbs torque on the stock turbo before the transmission becomes unreliable. At this point what ZZP says won't sway me away from trying. We've got to try at least something.

ZZP basically said we won't touch the 6t40 transmission or even the 6t70 for that fact. seeing as how the 6t45 is bigger than the 6t40 counterpart we may be able to get some stuff done with that one and swap it out. found this neat bit of info right off of GM powertrains website. This confirms that the MH8 and the MH7 have the same bell housing bolt pattern and this is paired on the LEA variant of the 2.4l ecotec motors.

Good news on the transmission issue. Yesterday I sent a email to a local performance transmission shop. K and M transmissions. I talked about building up the 6T40 or swapping out the 6T45 and building it given there is no electrical differences and it will physically fit.

There response was… They are familiar with that particular trans and that building the trans will play absolutely no role in techma issues. And this, "blown pressure switches are only fixable through replacing with the updated part, transgo did recently come out with a pressure switch repair kit for them however. The main issue are the 3-5-reverse wave plate breakage, again nothing can be done aside from tearing into it and replacing it with the updated wave"

I have the updated wave plates all 2014 have them also I posted this a few pages back to really make it hold you'll need a torque converter either from level 10 which I have its about 600.

I sent an email to them asking about other parts that may need to be upgraded (besides tq converter and wave plates). Also asking how long parts may take to develop and if he knows of any physical size difference.

Over the weekend I reached out to Jeff at Engineered Performance since I knew his back ground as a GM trans tech and GM LSD builder he said if you guys have any questions about the 6T to reach out to him And he would share as much as he can.

Engineered Performance: a blast from the past. I was about to go with them for my supercharged Cavalier when I learned the Cobalt SS would have a factory installed Quaife option. Nice to see they are still around.
