Onstar free?

When I bought my car back in October, the dealer "helpfully" activated Onstar for me before I could stop him. So I figured I'd just suffer with it and it would run out in six months. By my count, that's Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May... so sometime soon they should be shutting me down.

I still haven't received a single email warning me it's running out, begging me to stay, offering me deals, threatening me with their refusal to send an ambulance no matter how I beg once they shut me off... not a thing. It's as though they aren't aware that I'm not on renewal.

Every bit of trial software I've ever owned has done this, every gym membership, every renewing prescription for Hulu and every MMO. It's as though Onstar simply isn't aware of what's about to happen... or has already happened. I'm not sure what the date was of my purchase, I glanced at my title yesterday while rooting through the glovebox and it says renew Sept 30.

Maybe I get Onstar for free forever? Or maybe they really aren't planning to spam me? Either would be welcome news.

When mine ended they sent a call through the radio to me. Scared the crap out of me. Lol. They let me know it ended.

I'm jealous as I am getting the letters, the emails, and at least one call thru the car audio last week. Eight more days to go.

Man, I wouldn't complain. When my OnStar was running close to it's end, I received a phone call at least twice a week, even though I told them every time I won't be subscribing and that it's a waste of their time and money to keep bugging me.

My car even screamed at me about 5 time over the course of 4 weeks, made an OnStar call on it's own, to try to get me to resubscribe. Ugh.

I'm sure I got the emails too, but I'm so used to deleting nearly everything that comes into my inbox, I'm grown numb to it all.

Don't even get me started on the XM radio! Holy crap!

All these extra "services" are the only regrets I have with buying the car. I don't suppose it would be any different with any other new car. They all have these "services" now.

Oh boy, don't get me started on OnStar. If I ever got a cold call from OnStar while I was driving, my reaction would be something like when Clark gets his membership letter to the jelly of the month club.

Do they already have your credit card number? You may want to keep an eye on that, or find yourself charged automatically.

I wasn't going to let them activate it at all, but the salesman begged because he said they got a bonus for it. I caved. But then sat there for 20 minutes idling because their system wasnt working. They gave me an extra 3 months free for the trouble. But I never used it once.

dont you just love when youre having a great time driving windows down and music blaring and then end up at a red light then out of no where your music goes down and you get a message from onstar and by the time you try to put the volume down the guy next to you is staring at you like wtf was that....
i didnt have the option to accept the call or deny it... lol quite funny

I have had my car to 2 weeks now and haven't activated my On Star yet, I will probably activate when I need it, but then again, I do have a cell phone in my car.

Activation by the dealer can be done w/o a credit card. I suspect activating after leaving the dealer will require using a credit card.

The way OnStar gets your credit card at the dealer is with the extra minutes for the phone option.

I didn't want it activated, I have "used" it twice accidentally by hitting the button when adjustin the mirror. I keep something plugged into the OBDII port so they send me monthly notices saying there's something really really bad wrong with my car oh my god we can't read a thing! Panic! Panic!

Seriously, I would gladly pay about $3 a month for the service of just being there in case of a wreck or emergency, and gladly pay $100 every time I actually used it. But that's nothing at all close to the rates they offer, which include lots of stuff I actively un-want, and I don't see any chance of them offering a deal for the one service I would appreciate, so I'm hoping it all goes away on its own.

I very nearly turned down the car when the dealer told me he'd activated it, even though it took two days to get the thing shipped in from out of state. Bad call, man. Don't mess with a man's ride without asking first.

They will activate it for you, trust me. Resistance is futile. If you have the MyLink radio you will know the moment it's activated because the OnStar icon will proudly glow white instead of being greyed out.

That would be cool if I didn't already have AAA... and have had for 25+ years and haven't seen anything that convinces me I ought to switch to some new fly by night company just because Chevy thinks its a good idea.

Will Onstar rescue me when I'm in someone else's car and it breaks down? Cause AAA has done in more than one instance. But you know what I don't want to know even if they will because AAA already does that, Onstar would have to beat them both on service and price and currently they aren't doing either.

I see why they are installed in cars, it's a great way to grab a new market that isn't already entrenched, first time car owners that aren't already hooked on AAA and so forth... I just wish it was easy to remove for those of us who aren't going to bite.... or that they were really offering some "killer app" that would make me forget all about the service I've been using for years.

Here in SE Michigan if you call the Chevy 24/7 800-CHEVUSA number for service you get a AAA service provider. I do not know if OnStar uses the same but it would take a lightening strike to convince me otherwise.
