I'm not sure...but don't 1.4T's have chain instead of timing belt....am I wrong on that?

Just about every engine produced today is an interference engine. It makes belt maintenance more important, but chains need inspected and if need be replaced at roughly the same mileage as a belt as well. The chain comment is based on personal experiences.
According to MY dealer, the chain is a lifetime part. The belt is not. I have not looked into how the belt is run, but make sure you replace any idlers and water pump and whatever else spins on the belt. It is almost never the belt that fails. A bearing in an idler will fail and then seize, disintegrating the belt and ruining your engine.
My comment on the chain being inspected comes from personal experience with timing chains in GM 4 cylinder engines. When an 80k mile chain is stretched to the point that the timing marks can not be lined up, its probably a good idea to replace it.
I am not a huge fan of timing belts, but they dont bother me enough to avoid an engine with one.
Its over several engine families and many vehicles.
Pushrod engines however have a much better chain style.
This is a 1.8 liter engine forum.
