It's not unusual to feel the car jerk. I usually shift at like 2k-3k.

I use M mode quite often, but not really for more power. I just have the 1.8 AUTO but I seem to have enough power more my driving needs. NO, I use "M" for MPG. I increase speed to about 50 MPH then I shift in to M-then + to 6, then go to the posted speed limit 60 MPH, set cruise and drive home. If I stay in "D", my car is constantly finding 5th gear (as I live in a fairly hilly area). I tried it first without cruise and I didnt push the gas pedal very much in 6th. So I decided 5th is not needed. (in these hills anyway).

Actually for us N/A if you're driving at 60 MPH sometimes (depending on the terrain) 5th gear is better with light throttle. You get a bit more torque from the lower gear but you get better fuel economy because you're not mashing the pedal as hard to keep the same speed.

mine feels kinda rough is that normal since its trying to learn how i shift between the gears.

Yes that's the car learning how to shift in M. Mine went through that for a few days, also went through that in a rental LTZ that had never been used in M mode. It'll go away soon.

Before it was totaled I never had an issue with my 1.8 auto and practically never used M.

I find it odd that you need to go into M mode to get up some speed on a hill being my 1.8 auto would redline if floored and would also turn off A/C when floored.

I never knew it would shut off the A/C. I always shut it off when I need to take off fast.

My 1.8 automatic accelerates adequately for a small car in D or M. Does your transmission not kick down when you accelerate? My trans seems pretty responsive.

I prefer to drive on the interstate in manual mode to avoid downshift. I really hate how the cruise is obsessed with maintaining speed perfectly. I don't mind losing up to 5 MPH when going up a hill. It's also really bad if I start cruise too far below my target. It'll downshift and red line to catch up, instead of patiently getting up to speed like it does in manual mode.

I usually put it back in auto for city driving, because it's super annoying to have to baby it every time you start from a red light or stop sign, and half the time I forgot I left it in manual mode.

A nice trick is that if you switch to manual while stopped, you can specify 2 or 3 as your lowest gear, so that when you're starting from a traffic light or stop sign you'll have a bit of mercy.

This is why I bought a manual transmission, even on my first car.

I once drove a Mazda3 rental with an auto transmission. I drove it around in M mode a lot. I have to say, it was one of the worst driving experiences ever. If I had an auto trans in my car, I would never use M mode. Often, the car is smarter than the operator.

You have to be stopped to preset 2 or 3.

If I accidently request an upshift too early afterwards, it will then downshift as you described which is TERRIBLY irritating. :sadbanana:
