Highway Driving in 'M'

So I shouldn't be using M mode when it's cold? I'm just trying to figure out the best to drive the car when it's cold.

My rule of thumb is dont push it till the engine gets to temp and even then give it a mile or so

I do. I keep it in lower gears but light on the gas. Shifting around 3-4k.
