sticky dash panel

Hi all
I'm new to the forum and I have a quick question. I have a 2012 5 door which I like very much. I was trying to clean the windshield on the inside and discovered the plastic piece between the dash and the windshield is very sticky. All the lint from the rag is stuck on it which makes it very difficult to use anything to clean the windshield. I know its not the Texas heat because it was done early in the morning. Anyone else have this issue?

Spill anything?

Half the interior plastic is made from the same stuff and has the same texture. If none of the other plastics sticky then you have residue on the dash. Either from the occupants or possibly from/ thru the HVAC system.

Did you try cleaning the dash? That would be quite telling!

No didn't spill anything, its the same acrossed the whole dash. I know the plastic is used in other areas. Also sticky on the door panel. Its still under warranty so guess I'll see what they think. Thought about cleaning the dash but don't really know what to use.

I doubt it but by sticky do you mean attracts lint or literally sticky like when you spill soda and don't clean it up?

Nothing in any of my Sonics was or is sticky.

No didn't spill anything. Lint from the rag sticks to it. Tried a paper towel first and that was real interesting! Weird deal I know.

I'm pretty sure that Texas Sonic is referring to "the plastic piece between the dash and the windshield." The area in question is the black plastic between the brick colored dash and the windshield.

To answer the original question with another question: Texas Sonic, do you by any chance smoke inside the vehicle? I have been guilty of doing so in the past, and have also noticed that this area of the dash got rather sticky on a hot day. I attributed the stickiness to smoke residue, but if you haven't smoked in the vehicle, then something else must be the cause, e.g., the HVAC as sx sonic mentioned above.

I suggest that you try cleaning the affected area with a warm damp towel and see if the stickiness returns. Good luck.

i had the same, but rather on the plastic part between the steering wheel assembly and the tachometer. i think it is because of the high temperature when you leave it parked under the sun. i wipe it with damped cloth then when it dries, small pieces of cotton is left behind. oh i also smoke inside the sonic.

Without posting a pic that is exactly the piece I'm talking about. I don't smoke at all so I know that's not the problem, but it does sit outside. I only have the windshield cover but I'm sure it doesn't help much. Cooling off in the mornings now so maybe that will help. Noticed last night that most pieces with the same material were sticky also so it wasn't confined to the windshield area. Will try the warm water on it to see if it helps. As per the owner's manual, you can clean the interior with a mild detergent (think car wash detergent--I'm pretty sure it specifically says no to dish detergent and the like). I just wipe all my plastic with a rag dipped in the bucket when I wash the car. Works great.

Just a guess but if I had the problem I would try either armorall or furniture polish. Both usually have a way of dissolving sticky stuff.

I tried armorall wipes a long time ago and left the plastic looking all greasy and nasty. Maybe I was doing it wrong. I'll stick to mild soap and water (or just plain water).

Of course it did and so would furniture polish.
But its that grease that will get the sticky stuff off. Then you can follow with something else that will take the oil off.

Kind of like using goo-gone or goof-off to remove sticky glue that soap won't remove.

I was able to see the picture. I would suggest trying to clean it as the members have stated and see if it becomes sticky again. Please keep us posted.

The chemicals they use on their wipes and in the spray is so strong, it'll strip the plastics of their protective chemicals causing your dash to age faster, which will make you want to use it more and more to get that oh-so-nice shine back.

Soap and water works great (no dish detergent!).
