The dealer has been great. They tried really hard to fix the problem. They wound up following GM's instructions to put in all these parts multiple times. The dealer did damage the car, however. While replacing the transmission they had a support bar across the top holding the engine up and it dented the heck out of some sheet metal under there that caused the hood to close crooked and scratched up a bunch of paint. GM finally said they were buying the car back and never moved on it. Instead they wanted me to come in for another part. I reluctantly agreed even though the lemon law had long since been disobeyed. That did not fix the problem so they wanted to put more parts in. When I said I would have to get a lawyer they stopped putting parts in it.

So did they buy it back?

No. They won't even "consider" buying it back until I remove the pedders (car only mod.) I offered to pay the dealer $515 (a bit high for shocks/springs labor since I have all original parts) out of pocket if they'd give me in writing they'd buy the car back. Answer was repeatedly "we cannot guarantee a buyback". The lawyer told me to leave the car as-is. BTW, this was all after they had already said they were buying it back and they stopped work on the vehicle then wanted me to come in for another part.

dkennedy you may be right, however one of the reasons for the lemon law in my state is so I don't bring the car back for the same problem more than 3 times. (6 times and counting) I live 30 miles away from the dealer.

I'll chime in.

I replaced the stock transmission fluid with Amsoil 75w-90 gear oil about two thousand miles ago and have no grinding issues anymore.

it could either be the fluid or my habits changed but I have even tried really quick cold shifts and it doesn't grind when before I could get it to grind on demand.

Others have reported luck with different fluid. There is talk that the spec on the transmission from the manufacturer is to use a different fluid than the one GM says to use. Either way, there is no excuse for a new car to grind. If changing fluid fixes a grind then that just means you are hiding a more serious problem. Just my two cents. Lawyer called today but I was swamped and couldnt' get back to him. :(

I saw this on Motor Trend's long term Verano review today.

Interesting, thanks. I probalby will not get another car if I get rid of the Sonic. The sonic sure is fun to drive though despite being slow at the low end. I love how this car handles with the Pedders. It's a little go-kart. If anything I was interested in the Focus ST but I'll probably just keep driving the Cobalt.

You need to re-read that article. He was not able to shift and release clutch smoothly. It has nothing to do with Synchros. Personally I can MAKE it grind, but have no problems with shifting at 5500 and having the little motor pull hard.
Everyone needs to keep in mind that this car is not a racer. Could it be better, of course but at $18,000 to $20,000 there is nothing better. Just my opinion!

I don't think I said anything about synchros and that article.

My cobalt was $12,700 out the door brand new and I cannot make it grind no matter what I do. Not a race car either.
