I've never been skeet or trap (what's the difference) shooting. My cousin invited me to go in the next couple weeks and I'm gonna try it. I don't own a shotgun yet but I'm hoping to before the end of the year.
**** you auto correct!
To simplify:
Trap: you stand in one spot and the clays fly away from you (thrower is in front and low) at varying speeds and varying angles. Singles and doubles are thrown.
Skeet:You have two "houses", a low house and a high house, placed about 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. During the game, shooters move to positions between 3 and 9 o'clock and take shots at birds flying from a pre-determined house. There are rounds of singles and doubles, where you either have to shoot a single bird or a double bird.
Skeet generally requires higher shooting skill, because you're dealing with birds flying at angles and different elevations. You're basically shooting starting with a 15* angle or so with the bird getting away from you to a 90* angle with the bird coming straight across. If I recall correctly, there's a round where 1 bird flies from each house a short time apart, so you have to lead and hit one, then lead and hit another. Hard to do consistently.
So, with skeet, target leading is key. With trap, you don't lead as much since it's mostly going away from you in a much straighter line. Less variables to worry about.
I shoot trap, because it's easier when you're shooting informally with a buddy. They just set up behind you and toss away. With skeet you need a marked field and two different throwers and at least two guys helping.
