Any update on this? My car is going in for a new trans with <15k miles. I'm hoping it resolves the issue, but I'm betting it's a combination of a lot of things including the heavy flywheel and throttle flair.
Still not getting why people think the flywheel weight or throttle would make a transmission grind with the clutch disengaged.
It shouldn't make an impact, but with the AC on the revs drop much faster and it doesn't grind. I demonstrated this to the dealer multiple times. I'm grasping at straws hoping it's something other than a design flaw in the trans as I don't want to go through the process of a lemon buy back.

I'm not an expert but the dealer changed my flywheel in an attempt to solve the problem.
Fair enough, however I will point out it clearly did not fix the problem and they were probably thinking the clutch wasn't releasing fully.
Though, there are simple tests for that.
I still say you need a new dealer.
GM customer service sent me to two dealers. One refused to work on the car and the other sent me down this road.
Why did they refuse to work on the car?

Hey klystron,
I apologize for your disheartening experience with the dealership. I would be happy to assist you to getting the answers that you seek for your Sonic the best that I can. Send a PM over to me, and I will definitely look into this further for you.

Based on observations from the past I will go with an assumption of maybe 15% of Sonics sold have a manual trans. Of those maybe 5% are having major issues. To GM it is cheaper to just replace the trans in those that fail than it is to engineer a solution and implement a production change. I am also a firm believer that the major US automakers are doing what they can to eliminate the 15% of sales that have a manual trans and only offer an automatic.
My dad wants a new truck, but it has to have a manual. The big 3 do not offer that and 4WD anymore. That being said, I dont even know if the import companies even offer that in this country.
If I wanted a CVT I would buy a snowmobile. Unless they found a way to actually make then work reliably and be serviceable I would not trust one to last at all. It would just about put an end to people upping the power of cars though.
For my 8th birthday my parents bought me a Suzuki LT80 that had a CVT.

Before then I had a DS80 that was a 5 speed and I liked it but it seized and threw me over the handlebars.![]()
Had the same one but not as near as nice.
The plastics got pretty messed up.
