The dealer would only replace the defect part, they wouldn't pull anything apart more than they had to. They also won't throw the block away...it will go back for warranty/market claim investigation.

Are they sure it is a cracked block and not a headgasket or cracked head? Very rare to see an Iron block crack.

and now a 2012 sonic with 28,000 on it.
So I might have a cracked black in 7,000 miles or so?

There is a warning light if it gets excessivly hot. Normal operating temp is in the 217-224 range. I want to say the light comes on at around 254-260.
Even my base 2007 Cobalt LS has a temp readout on the DIC.
The Sonic ECU already monitors coolant temp, they just need to rig the DIC to display it.
