35k cracked block

The dealer would only replace the defect part, they wouldn't pull anything apart more than they had to. They also won't throw the block away...it will go back for warranty/market claim investigation.

Yes they ordered a short block it came in today. It is the defective part.

Are they sure it is a cracked block and not a headgasket or cracked head? Very rare to see an Iron block crack.

This post I started was for you all FYI. Check my first post, check your coil packs first by taking one out and seeing if it's wet. Keep an eye on your coolant reservoir. Dealer said mine was cracked between 1st and 2nd cylinder.

Was probably a rare casting defect. For the majority here I really wouldn't worry about it.

and now a 2012 sonic with 28,000 on it.

So I might have a cracked black in 7,000 miles or so?

Well,

Using that logic a 1928-1931 Ford Model A also had cracked blocks from time to time. I guess that means your Sonic can too? opcorn:

Sorry I have not responded earlier. I've been very busy. New engine install went perfect. No problems with new engine. However I looked at the replacement engine and it said Daywoo (spelling?) on the block. The head and the block were cracked. A temp gauge sure would of helped and given me a heads up to my engine problem. No codes or idiot lights were set of prior to my problem. FYI guys

I also had to have a new one put in my 2012 5 speed 1.8 @ 20k miles. One dealership said I had a hose issue causing overheating (dealer blowing smoke), second break down, replaced the thermostat at the dealership by my house and the next day I had a cracked block.

I keep hoping that it won't happen again but I have lost faith in how Chevy has put the Sonic together, with the assortment of electrical issues, and gearing problems to name a few.

At least next engine issue that comes up Chevy said they would Lemon Law it...

But, all in all, you are not the only one that this has happened too... Wish I knew what happened to the Chevy's that would run for 20k miles with a bad transmission and a cracked head gasket.....

Cracked cylinder head

So a month ago I had my thermostat replaced...... Took car in for no heat and now they said I have a cracked head..... I'm starting to see a pattern here....at least I'm still in my power train warranty.

Would not be the first vehicle to crack heads from over heating.


Luckily it seems pretty straight forward to Change.

Wonder if these cracked blocks could/would be tied into the fact that the car doesn't come with a way to warn owners that the car is close to overheating...

if only there was some kind of gauge invented that Chevy could have placed as a warning...

There is a warning light if it gets excessivly hot. Normal operating temp is in the 217-224 range. I want to say the light comes on at around 254-260.

And at 260 your engine is toast. On my short list is a boost gauge and a temp gauge. My other car has an oil light that comes on at 4psi. 4! If my engine has 4 psi of oil pressure, it's already toast. My if Chevy (iron block/aluminum head motor) gets to 260 degrees, it's already toast too.

Even my base 2007 Cobalt LS has a temp readout on the DIC.

The Sonic ECU already monitors coolant temp, they just need to rig the DIC to display it.

The overheat light comes on at 255*F. Had mine go off when cause of a faulty coolant sensor in the radiator but the motor never overheated and actually running at normal temps.

My theory on the lack of a temp gauge is that GM didnt want people seeing the coolant temp and freaking out about it. I was a bit stunned when I found out how high the normal operating temp is.
