6 Speed trans whine and replacement MASTER thread

I still don't know what they are doing with my car yet. I've called several times and never got a call back so I went up there yesterday after work and the car is still sitting in the same place. The service rep said they were going to pull my tranny out and apart. I know everyone is saying that they can't repair this transmission but this is the second dealer to say they are going to pull it apart and repair if possible. Maybe the service department isn't aware that they can't fix, IDK. All I know is I want my car back. I'm tired of driving this rental. The service rep asked me what modifications I had made to the car, I said none and he asked what the controller (Ultragauge) was on the dash. I laughed and told him that wasn't a controller, that it was basically gauges since Chevy is too cheap to put real gauges in the car. The only thing done to the car is a 2.5" exhaust with a 40series Flowmaster.

You've just encountered two bad dealers. I recommend you get in contact with GM customer service and get them to tell the dealer to call TAC.

Nico, I'm thinking the same. I stopped by the dealership to get an update a little bit ago. The service rep said that the transmission has been pulled and they are waiting for tools to arrive from another dealership so they can pull it apart. I'm not mentioning anything to them about TAC or what information I've read about on here. Customer Service has placed a call to the dealership but the dealer hasn't returned their call yet. The service rep did tell me that he will call me when he has more information that I didn't need to stop in to check on it.

The irony is that there aren't any special tools needed. The M32 series is a pretty straightforward gearbox. I'm sorry that you are getting the runaround and I hope that you eventually get a new transaxle. Your story is 100% opposite of what I have going on.

To recap, my car has spent about 2 hours at the dealer so far. That was just to confirm my diag. I got a call today that my trans is now at the dealer. On Monday I'll drop my car off so they can swap it out. I should have it back Tuesday afternoon.

Well.......I picked up my car this afternoon. They did in fact install a new transmission in the car. The service rep told me that they couldn't repair it and GM sent them a new one. I told him that's what just about all of the dealerships have been doing but I'd let them figure it out on their own.

I was happy my car was returned to me until I got in it and took off. As soon as I got on the highway I noticed the steering wheel was not straight, simple fix...... but when I stopped I heard this electric motor sound when the brake was applied (never heard it before) so I done what I had to do at the office and headed straight back to the dealership. Got my service rep and I told him about the steering wheel and then I pointed out the noise when the brakes were applied. He got the head mechanic and he said it sounded like the vacuum assist motor was up against something. I told him I've never heard that noise so I was concerned. He said it was safe to drive and to come back Monday and they would fix the issue.

It keeps going........I have a 60 mile drive home, once I cross the state line into Louisiana (rough ass roads) I start hearing clunks and clanks from the passenger side that I had never heard before. As soon as I got home I opened the shop and got the frontend up in the air to see where the hell all this noise was coming from. what do I notice right away......Ball joint bolt not tightened on the spindle, I look at the driver side just to see if it was tight and while rolling across to the other side I noticed that the front bolts that hold the subframe in were missing on the left and right side and the holes weren't even lined up, i finally make it to the driver side and the bolt on that ball joint is loose also. I move around to find this vacuum assist motor he's talking about and I find it laying on the top of the electric steering motor and the hose that connects to it dangling by the CV joint. I continue to look around and find another bolt missing. Needless to say I'm not happy one bit at all. I called the dealership and of course they are closed. First thing in the morning I'm going to be up there. I'm a happy go lucky person and it takes a lot to get me fired up but this has. I'd expect this kind of work from a mom and pop shop that isn't ASE Certified or GM trained. I'm a mechanic and although I don't have the certifications they do, my work is 100% better than there's. Every nut and bolt, electrical connections, tie strap, wiring harness is back in place when I do a job. The ONLY reason these YAHOO's got to touch my car is because it was a warranty repair. See what happens in the morning!!!

Damn, I wouldn't drive it back, I'd make them come and get it with a tow truck. No telling what damage could occur from driving it like that, if it hasn't already. That is totally unacceptable, you have every right to be furious. That's not just a screw up, that's total incompetence.

Yeah, I was going to tighten up the ball joint bolts just to be sure they didn't pop off so i could take it back but I changed my mind and decided they need to come get my car and bring me another loaner car. I could fix everything that is wrong with it myself but I'm not. Those YAHOO's are going to do it.

Yeah, don't fix their mistakes. If you do that then they can claim you're lying or some crap like that. They need to see how it was when you got it. The head mechanic needs to be fired, the service manager, too. Make sure to get customer service here involved and write some letters to Chevy documenting what they did.

Sorry, but Customer Service can't do anything except take notes. GM won't do anything to the dealership either and I guarantee the dealership won't do anything to the mechanic. The best thing to do is to make it publically known what type of work to expect from the dealership if you take your car there. The dealership obviously sucks, I called several times to get an update and never got a return call, Customer Service called as well and didn't get a reply the first time. I had to stop by to get updates. Today while i was there, a guy walked in to find out what was going on with his truck and the service rep (same guy i had) says "are you ready to take your truck, it's ready". Why the hell do I have to show up to get answers or find out my vehicle is ready. Isn't that his job.... return my calls, answer my questions, keep me posted as to what is going on with my vehicle and to call me when my vehicle is ready? Okay, I've vented enough about this. Almost makes me want to switch to Ford and I hate them. LOL!

Ugh I hate to say it and I bet you already thought it but if what you can see is wrong what is wrong that you can't see?


Vacuum assist motor, don't the brakes get vacuum from the engine or is that not possible with a turbo? I'd think itd have plenty of vacuum when braking?

It's only activated when the brakes are applied and it's not a big vacuum pump like you would see on a race motor. It's as big as a windshield washer resevoir pump

I agree with you also. There's probably more wrong with the car. I just didn't see it because I was so ticked off about everything I had already found.

This could have been a serious liability issue for the servicing dealership. Your vehicle potentially could have lost steering control and resulted in dire consequences up to and including a fatality collision. Where did all the qualified service technicians go? Doesn't anyone bother to double check their work anymore? There seems to be a serious void of competence in all phases of our modern society these days!

simple2me, that is a major bummer. It is unfortunate that they did such a half a$$ed job on your car. Hopefully they make it right and you don't have to deal with them again.

Now for an update on my car. I left off with the dealer ordering a transmission. It took 2 days for it to show up. On Monday morning I dropped off my car and they had the transmission in at 2:00pm. There is a catch though. These transmissions are shipped dry and the dealer was unaware of this when they ordered it.

So the dealer calls to tell me that the trans is in but, they are waiting on GM to ship them the proper gear oil. It took GM CCA (Customer Care's an Afterthought ) 4 days to finally overnight the fluid to my dealer.

I got my car back yesterday. It drives great. The dealer even did an alignment to get the toe back in to spec and re-center the steering wheel since they had the sub-frame out.

In summary, I was without a car for only 4.5 days. GM CCA is still the slow moving dinosaur they were when I worked there. Molle MC of Pittsburg, KS has an awesome service department with good people working there.

I still get random 3rd gear grinds, and now I'm noticing an interesting shift behavior.... When I pull the shifter from 3rd to 4th, it definitely feels like the shifter has to travel a little back to the left to engage fourth. Instead of just straight back from 3rd like it has always been.

Who doesn't love the gear shifting lever pull from 3rd to 4th? Well, currently, I don't. And it has me wondering if this is also why I'm having a 3rd gear issue. It could be that another shifter cable adjustment is in order. Maybe I'll dig up the old bulletin and reset the cables myself.

They sent a wrecker out to get my car. I had to ride with the wrecker driver back to the dealership to get my loaner car. They gave me a 2014 Silverado loaded out. Wouldn't have been my first pick but it's got all the bolts holding the frontend together (i hope). See how long they keep it this time and I requested to look at the vehicle on the lift before I leave with it this time. One of the mechanics was in the Service Rep area and he asked what was towed in and when they said my car he knew that the mechanic didn't do something right and commented, "doesn't surprise me". Now that they know I'm not an idiot I think they'll go over my car and make sure everything is like it is suppose to be before calling me to come and get it.

And hopefully they give your car to another tech. Real bummer man. I believe we're all human and all make mistakes but that is down right scary the number of mistakes and severity, absolutely unacceptable.

Wrecker, I haven't heard that term in years. I used to drive one, and I preferred to call it a wrecker, but the more common industry standard has always been "wheel lift" or "tow lift". I guess some people get a little sensitive when they hear that a wrecker is coming to pick up their car.

Things may have changed but my memory is the dealer mechanics (which technicians were known as before required to pass tests) had to correct their own work (off the clock) which could be an incentive to do it right the first time. Don't know how this is treated in modern times as my local dealer techs seem to do it right on the first try.

It kind of sounds like you may be having the shift tower issue. Make sure the bolt that runs down through the center of the tower is still nice and tight before you adjust the cables again.
