6 Speed trans whine and replacement MASTER thread

Hey there all.

I hate to add to this thread but I believe I'm falling victim of needing a trans replaced.

I have this noise that I can start to hear at 35 mph all the way through about 60mph.

The noise is hard to explain, to me it sounds like a deep buzzing noise or kind of like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle.

It does it in neutral or with the clutch pressed in, as well as in any gear for the correct speed.

Honestly it sounds kind of like a bad when bearing but the sound does not change when turning the wheel so that is why I believe the trans is at fault.

I took a small ride tonight, was an hour each way. The wifey said what's that noise, on the way home the noise has gotten louder.

I am almost at 50,000 miles if that matters.

What do you think ?

just curious, if it doesn't rise & fall with engine speed could be something else..

I had a vacuum leak in my old Riviera... make quite a bit of noise too...

yea, not a vacuum leak..wish it was tho.

so did like you asked, or close to it if that ok, i dont like free revvin my car to 3,500 RPM's but it made it to 3,000 and i could not hear a noise.

so as i started driving there was no noise for about 3 minutes then slowly it got louder and louder.

then i noticed as i was slowing down, still in gear the noise gets deeper, like whatever is breaking doesnt like that and it continues until i come to a stop(clutch now depressed).

I am thinking wheel bearing now and i should probably start a new thread pertaining to it ? called the dealer for a quote, 500 bucks.

i will once again make it do it on the way home to continue troubleshooting.....:confused:

what do you think ?

could be...but if it's a ticking sound... that's odd. No loose break line hitting the wheel as it turns? Coming from one side only? Take that wheel off and look around, see any grease, broken boot cover? Any shiny metal that might signify a rubbing occuring?

Figuring out what's wrong with a car is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much fun :) NOT

i would say a thunk sound but I can't "feel" it, but sounds like i should be able to.

It sounds like one side, but i have yet been able to pinpoint it to either side, but i don't think its the back, the reason i started in the trans section...

wish my cell could record it, doubt it tho.

and cant hear nothing with windows down, 40 mph is a bit windy.

yea this is so much fun, thanks for reminding me lol

Dropped my car off earlier today at the dealer for the Trans whine. Just got a called saying a new Trans is going to be ordered for my car:)

my transmission in my rs went out at 3000 miles. dealer replaced it though so no complaints for now. my situation was a little weird i lost 6th, it started out as a grind when i would shift into 6th then one day it wouldnt even shift. so i took a trip to the dealer and they said they have never seen that happen and they ordered me a new one.

The dealer also told me that they had never seen a transmission problem on a sonic. So now that I'm getting my new Trans the ddm works short shifter won't fit it? I'm pretty sure I'm right.

So after a couple of weeks there is still some issues with the brand new trans. Difficulty shifting into reverse, 3-4 grind, new ticking noise, and previous "whoom whoom" noise blamed on tires still present after getting brand new Continental ExtremeContact DWS mounted, balanced, and aligned. Back in we go.

Video below. You have to turn the audio up but you can hear the tick/rattle and about the same time my blinker goes on while exiting freeway you can hear the "tire noise" like a rapid heart beat.

Finally got the car back today. Bad hub which is what i had mentioned the first time I took it in but blamed it on the tires. Fingers crossed for no more issues.

I have nearly an identical noise on my car that I have yet to find time to take in for service.

Right when I hit 35-40 MPH you can hear it very clearly once identified. I wouldn't classify my noise as "deep" per say. I also wouldn't say it's high pitch, it's a strange tone.

Whether it's in gear or out of gear makes no difference. Clutch in or out also plays no role. It doesn't increase with engine RPM.

I suspect a wheel bearing. It's been like this for nearly 3k miles. Hopefully soon I can get it in to the dealer. I need to remove my downpipe prior to service which is why I've neglected taking it in.

Car is a 2012 6mt 1.4 with 10k miles.
