6 Speed trans whine and replacement MASTER thread

Well i got my car back today and what a difference a new transmission made. Its silky smooth and makes 0 noise. The clutch feels better and the shifts feel crisper. I dropped my car off on Sunday and picked it up today(Tuesday).

So thank you Jay Chevrolet always being a great dealership to work with. Hopefully this will be my last repair for a while.

Well my dealer called me today and said they didnt hear anything out of the usual..... Im goin there tomorrow and take a tech on a ride with me so they can actually understand what im talking about. Pain in my ass.

Tell them to check the service bulletins from Chevy. My dealer called me last week and said after hearing the noise, there is a service bulletin from Chevy that tells them to just replace the entire transmission, no questions asked.

Has anyone answered the question as to whether or not the new transmission is more robust or should I expect to have it replaced in it's entirety every ~45K miles?

So i looked around and couldn't find anything, but on my receipt for my warranty work it says to replace the transmission as per bulletin 10-07-29-001B. Maybe somebody who is more resourceful than I can find the actual bulletin text.

When I get my car back, I will ask if they can print off that service bulletin for me. I dropped the car off on 11/21, they said they ordered the new transmission on 11/24, so it could be another week possibly. I really have no idea.

I have a 2012 Sonic-6 speed standard, turbo ltz that had that whining noise. Took it in and was told it was unsafe to drive and have not seen my car since. That was November 17. They said it is the transmission, no specifics. Took 2 weeks to find a tranny and now I have been told that the company who was supplying the tranny will not release it to GM. The management at the dealership and GM Canada are involved in trying to get me a new transmission. I am getting increasingly frustrated, trying to keep my cool. But this is p*ssing me off. A month! Has it taken this long for anyone else to have their car fixed?
In the beginning they also intimated it would not be under warranty and wanted me to pay for a loaner. Car is not even three years old! They finally decided it is under warranty and gave me a vehicle to drive in the mean time.
Should it really take this long?
Oh, by the way, I am in Canada.

Mine has been in since Monday. They tell me it is to be replaced.
Also they say it is on back order. This 6 speed manny doesn't get rebuilt.
So I drive the loaner for a while till done.

Well, well, well! Go pick up my baby today. A month to the day I took her in. They finally got the tranny replaced. No explanation yet as to what was wrong with the old one. I am curious to find out.
And they were gracious enough to point out that the did a "FREE" alignment. I said I expected that and wouldn't it be included in the repairs. Well, yes, was the answer.

Update.

I got my car back yesterday. Had the loaner vehicle for over a month. Ended up putting almost 3000 miles on the Buick Enclave they gave me, which doubled the miles it had on it haha.

Anyway, car seems to be driving fine now, albeit not as smooth/quiet as that Buick. I really hope this is not a "Every two years/45K miles" replacement. That will make me not very happy.

Did they tell you if it was an updated trans with better parts, or just the same type of the one replaced?

I cant help but wonder if they are putting in the same trans if it will indeed fail again done the road.

Really would hope for clarification on this for peace of mind.

I purchased a 2012 Arctic white turbo 1.4 LTZ 6spd early this December and I love it but I too unfortunately have this whine coming from my car. It made the noise when I bought it but the dealership certified it for a year so I wasn't too concerned. The noise got louder and I did a little research here and now I think its just a matter of time till the tranny grenades on me. Took it to them last Saturday because it threw me a P0420 code=faulty cat. I told them about the noise(this was before I found this thread) when I dropped it of for the engine light and asked them to see what they could find. They told me I had a vacuum leak caused by a faulty rocker arm...bull hunky! I informed them that I was an ICAR certified body tech and restored corvettes for 4 years and built full blown drag cars that ran in the 8's so they would realize they cant bs me with tech talk and that there was no way in hell that the noise I heard was from a freakin' vacuum leak. I am going Saturday the 10th to have a tech ride w. me to hear the noise w/ me in the car. I can't thank you all enough for the ample amount of ammunition in the form of information this thread has provided me. I will post again after I visit the dealer and ride w/ the tech. Thanks again everyone! Oh and Advantage Chevy of Bolingbrook, IL please get on ordering me a new trans ASAP please.

Seeing all these comments and notes in some respect makes me wish I just sprung with the automatic. Heck, I could of gotten an automatic cheaper and had more options since the lot I was at only had two manuals. But being a 20 year old who loves cars and has always been told "Manual is the only way to go, it's a turbo car" I went with the 6MT. I'm really hoping these issues with the manual won't affect resale value.

I'm already running into the 2nd gear grind I think. I've noticed recently, as it has gotten colder, that when shifting into second it makes an audible noise and has noticeable resistance. Not a horrible grind, but it doesn't shift like all the other gears. I've also noticed my 2nd gear has a little bit of a whine too it. Unsure if it's normal or not.

I'm starting to think that on newer cars, it's just a better idea in general to go automatic. Since they're more popular, it seems like there's more time, technology and robust parts going into them.

Mine starts to whine in 3rd and gets louder as mph goes up. Whine continues in gears 4, 5 and 6. Yesterday during my morning commute a new issue presented itself. Once I get past 55 mph there is a heavy vibration that starts and if i get to 60 or above it shakes the whole car and literally chatters my teeth and makes it hard to focus my eyes because of the violent shaking. Chevrolet please do something about this! It seems to be a growing epidemic and needs to be fixed. You have a loyal customer base and could be at risk at loosing a large segment of it if this isn't properly taken care of. Recall the trans make one that actually works would be the best option IMO. I don't beat this car up at all and I have no performance mods on it other than the silicon IC hoses that were on the car when I purchased it used from the Chevy Dealer. I hope my second trip to the dealer goes better than the first time. If it doesn't I will be contacting a lawyer because at this point I feel I have been sold a lemon! :sadbanana:

Fully covered by 5/100 warranty.

I've posted this elsewhere too, but I didn't see that you had asked this question here. From what I understood, they swapped out the exact same transmission. This tells me that in my situation, I will need to replace the entire transmission every 45K miles or so, (that's 2 years or less for me.) That is completely unacceptable. I will probably drive this car until the 5year/100K warranty is up, and then switch brands. Unless Chevy can do something to fix this.

I meant to ask how much that service would be if I wasn't under warranty, but I forgot while I was there. I can't imagine it would be had for less than about $2K though.
