cant launch above 4500rpm

Like the title says I cant launch above 4500rpm no matter what I try to do. And im also getting a pulsing sound when im flooring it in 3rd and 4th gear engine pulses likes it losing power
Mods-budget tune. 2.5 zzp and intake thanks guys.

Not being able to launch above 4500 sounds like standard behavior. I know my '95 Saturn won't rev above 4500 when it's sitting still, and it says so in the owner's manual. I don't recall seeing that in the Sonic manual and can't find it at a glance, but I haven't had time to read the whole thing yet. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a feature that they just didn't mention because most owners won't ever find out otherwise. I haven't tried revving mine that high out of gear, so I don't know for sure if it's normal.

Regarding the 3rd and 4th gear WOT problem, I have no idea. I would talk to Trifecta.

There was an extensive thread on problems with the budget tune but I can't find it now. I had a serious surging issue with the budget tune under WOT. It took a few revisions by Vince to all but eliminate it. A couple others had the same issue. Log it and send it to Vince explaining the issue and he will help you out.

Even my 1.8 I launch at 2500. by the time the clutch is totally disengaged my foot is buried. It works good for me.

I was wondering the same thing. Either showing off like a fool or trying to break axles at the track with slicks is all I can figure.

I'd like to read that thread. I've had the pulsing issue off and on. Will be upgrading to the full tune soon.

Yea crazy. Same thing for the cobalts, they were an econo box, not a Ferrari or lambo who would do anything to that thing...... Oh wait GM pushed 1,600hp out of the cobalt engine and ran 800hp thru it for several land speed records. :facepalm:



Sorry I just despise the "it's just an econobox" excuse. You are right thou, there's zero point in trying to dump the clutch much above 3k RPM on an engine with this power band and gearing..... let alone 4,500 rpm.

It's actually sad that engine saving technology like this must exist.

OP the RPM limiter is normal, The ECM is trying to protect the engine and drivetrain from YOU.

Who would pop the clutch in a Ferrari!? You're thinking backwards! Many many more would do it in an econobox then a $200K+ car.


Now me, I baby both of my cars because I depend on them and don't want to spend money on fixing things. But, in my head it makes far more sense to abuse a cheap car then a really expensive one.


Sonic : pop the clutch.
Ferrari : Polish it with a diaper and DON'T let Ferris drive it.
