Funny story.

My CEL had been on for about 400 miles. So I did some research on the Trifecta tune and decided to dive in and get it. That CEL was gonna bug the **** out of me and I really didn't want to give up my intake.

I got done at work and ordered one before I left the office.

I got in my car to go home, drove a few miles and POOF! CEL is gone.

Go figure

My theory = It's rigged!!! jk

At least I have a tune on the way

Hi Forum, Just want to clarify and reiterate GM Policy on Aftermarket Modifications. GM Service Policies & Procedures Manual should be referred to and used as the standard.

Aftermarket Engine Performance Enhancement Products and Modifications. I agree with Sonic and his response to Machine, some dealerships are more "modification friendly" than others but that usually isn't the norm.

Yes, but it still has to be proven that the part caused the failure (see Mag/moss warranty act). And this quote is refering to diesels, which are a whole other story. Diesel tuners are MUCH more likely to cause damage than a tuner on a small gas. This is because some of these tuners can add as much as 100+hp, and they do this by injecting way too much fuel, and alot earlier to get the cylinder pressures way up. This is the wrong way to make power, and puts undo stress on nearly every rotating component in the motor. ANd all the excess fuel burns in the exhaust and overheats the turbo. You can make the same power with a bigger turbo, exhaust, and fuel injectors and not blow the motor. But that costs way more.

What I don't like is how GM esentially promotes modifications but if you don't pay 3x as much for their stuff they void your warranty. I mean, look in the Sonic brochure....4 pages of Sonics that look like they should be in the Fast and the Furious. Why would I pay $500 for a GM intake when I could get an AEM or Injen for $200-250. Is the GM one safer.....no. They do the same thing.

Finally got the dreaded P1101 (MAF Sensor Out Of Self Test Range) after a month and 1300 miles of driving. Putting the stock intake back on until HPT or EFILive get off their bum's.

The intake is doing what it or any other intake, regardless of brand, will do. It is creating increased air flow and volume. And the Sonic is doing what it will do with any intake that is creating increased air flow and volume, it is throwing up the caution flag. You have to ask yourself if an aftermarket intake that doesn't give you a CEL is giving you performance gains worth the cost of the intake.

A tune is required to take full advantage of the performance of the intake. The tune tells the ECU what the "new norm" is and keeps the car from learning down the performace gain.

I don't think that this intake is a "POS" and I don't think that having to have a tune to properly make use of an intake is unreasonable.

To add to Sonic's response: the cars that I am familiar with that are most likely to have after market higher flow intakes are also the cars whose owners are most likely to have their cars tuned, to the extent that in my mind, at least, the two go hand in hand. There are benefits to a tune that do not require any other modifications, but mods such as a higher flowing intake are intended to function with a tune. I do not know but someone following this thread who does know will chime in, but I suspect the Camaro's GMPP intake comes with a programming change to the ECU. I know the GMPP change to the Cobalt SS/SC included a programming change to the ECU. IIRC the GMPP Supercharger for the Ecotec engined Cavalier also included a change.

My point: changes in the intake will be best effected if the ECU is able to recognize the change and even GM recognizes that.

FWIW every car I've had an intake on before this was, generally speaking, either speed density OR I had full tuning ability. I have full tuning ability on my Mustang, my Cobalts I had... etc. So this was slightly uncharted territory for me. For the money I paid (40% off) I won't complain too much. ZZP does put that restrictor donut in the intake, but it isn't doing the trick on here.

We'll get there, and yes I know Trifecta can fix it. I'm just a crotchety guy who likes to self tune is all. Therefor it will sit in the box until such time I can

I'd be willing to bet it would be later this year, at the earliest, that HP Tuners or EFI Live has full support. Hopefully sooner, as it's good for the aftermarket on these all around. Not sure if you'd be interested or not, but we can write your tune so that HP Tuners can read it and then you can edit whatever tables HP Tuners has access to (when they come out with support anyway). Just like we did on the cobalts until HP Tuners released all their new stuff.

I agree with you BNR, I think its going to be a while. I had hoped HPTuners would get on the ball with the E78 PCM. It's a PCM that's used on some truck/V8 applications... so I figured they'll be on it. Usually if it has anything to do with GM V8's HPT is johnny on the spot with it I hope I'm proven wrong, but I really think the time has come and gone for their Dodge support. Anyone I know serious with an SRT4 still is running a stand-alone anyway now.

I gotta be honest, I much prefer HPT over EFILive. I think both are good products, but I'm just so used to the VCM interface! So I'll hold out long as I can....

If you/Trifecta run another special I might be game. I'd like to own the cable and all that jazz. Otherwise I can live with the car in stock form. I mean its the FIRST MODEL year of the Sonic, a wiser man would leave it alone until any issues shake out hehe.
