You should learn how to solder.
Not necessarily for this, but because it comes in handy so often. Never again will you need to have a crimp connector, or a plug.

I was thinking that same thing yesterday, actually. Watched a video on how to hack airplay to run in a vehicle, they were soldering things and I thought I should pick up some soldering supplies to play with.

I did it once in middle school, but that was the extent.

I would recommend buying a good soldering station. Don't assume just because you're new to it, or because you won't do it much that a cheap one will work. A cheap non-temp controlled iron will make everything harder and longer to do and the tips don't last.

Pick your self up a Weller WESD51 like this : Weller WESD51 Digital Soldering Station - Amazon.com

I believe its 60 watts which is a whole lot more than a cheapy iron which is usually 20-30W. You also can control temp which is nice and it will make things 10X easier.

Also pick up some 37/63 rosin core solder like this : Amazon.com: Kester 44 Rosin Core Solder 63/37 .031" 1 lb. Spool: Home Improvement

I was "scolded" for taking the time to make my conduits come close to matching the air line. Apparently it is preferred that we just puke **** in and not try to make it look like a professional did it.

Very nice. We use .414 x spread for 45deg parallel offsets. Where the product of the two numbers is added to the length of the second line before the bend, and subtracted from the first line where it straightens again.

Is that what you do? Or do you just freestyle? The geometry of conduit bending is probably the same stuff we use for our pipe racks. Maybe just a tad more forgiving to correct if its off a little.

Tangent of half the angle multiplied by the distance center to center of the conduits. Tangent of 22.5* is 0.41421. We do not use 45* offsets all that often though. I want to say that on a 2.5" C-C I had to shift my offset by about 1". I try to use 30*, but had to use 45* for the one offset there.

EMT is very forgiving to work with. Unfortunately the air line I had to try and match is far from perfect. The fitters on this job seem to have no pride in the work they did. I know I am not perfect, but I am getting a lot better. I take great joy in the challenge though.

We could use a few guys like you on this job. There was one fitter apprentice that was doing a very nice job of bending the copper lines for air flow switches, but I think he is the only one that took pride in his work.

Yeah,
Somehow those "dumb construction workers" can lay out and build radius walls too.

I feel I was lucky to be in that position for the little time I was. At least I learned to respect the trade unlike many others.

I think engineers need to work in the field before becoming an engineer. It is amazing how many times we have to re-engineer something due to the engineers not actually looking at what is in the field.

It is always amusing when they want something mounting in a place that it clearly can not be mounted. Or they want conduit used that is incredibly undersized. Cant pull 3/#2 AWG and a #6 ground in a 3/4" rigid. Or try pulling 6 circuits with individual neutrals using #10 wire in a 3/4 rigid. One of my favorites is the 90A motor starter with overloads set to 7A and #10 wire going out to the 30A disconnect at the motor. We were all baffled by that one.

My father is a tool maker and designs and builds working scale models of off-shore oil equipment. I feel insignificant when I think of how smart he is.

Sorry Chevy I let you down today.
On my way home from work at 8am I was at a three lane stop light. Semi to my left, I'm in the middle, and an A4 pulls up last minute to my right. Light turns green I go. I only really wanted to get in front of the semi but I said what the heck I not only lost, I was killed lol. Guy rolled down his window and even waved goodbye At the next stop light he was to my left. He was looking over trying to peer inside my car. So I rolled down my window and asked for a redo lmao. He said "I love you but Chevy can't beat Audi"
