Deer hit. Probably totaled

Hi all, Glad to be here and well. I hit a deer on the GSP this morning and wrecked the new Sonic. This car is great! The state trooper was a little surprised that there was no injury other than bruised knuckles. It was a pretty big deer. Lots of damage to the Sonic. The air bags left and front all deployed. OnStar let me know it was contacting emergency service before I had the car stopped. All in all very impressive. Thanks Chevy, OnStar, and NJSP.

I have never before had a high speed impact. The biggest problem was seeing after the air bags deployed to try and get out of the roadway. There was a guard rail and no shoulder so I was still in the travel lane and the very nice, professional, gentlemen trooper pushed me up to a safe spot on the median to await the tow truck.

I was lucky. We are thrilled with this car and assuming it is totaled will be buying another one.

Glad to hear there were no serious injuries. I would buy it from the insurance company once they total it out. It still has a lot of parts worth a lot of $ on it. Did you take the deer home?

Timing is bad. The 2012's are all gone and don't know when we can get a 2013. We had trouble finding this one and bought it at a dealer 60mi away. The big boss will only buy red. I will only take turbo manual.

We will borrow something, rent, buy a clunker or something. We got a good deal on the 2012 but maybe now we can get an RS. Our other car is a diesel F250 that gets about 14mpg so we will need to do something fairly quick.

We have never had a car in this class before. I changed jobs and do a 100mi+ commute. The Dodge Charger was killing us in gas so we started shopping in the 35mpg and up class. We quickly settled on the Sonic. Both of us are just thrilled with this car. This started out as just a money thing and then we both just fell in love with this car. We have probably never had a car we were both this pleased with.

I do not know about NJ but here in Michigan if you hit a deer you get to keep it. Also keep everyone informed of if you insurance totals out the car. Other then the airbags going off you insurance may or may not want to fix your car. My wife had a accident with a lot more damage then you have (not on a Sonic) and yes the insurance did total the car out for us but guess what?? yes some one fixed the car and we seen it on Carfax but there was no mention of it being totaled, anyway glad you are OK and good luck.

How fast were you going? my air bags never deployed nor was the damage that bad and I was going more than 45 down a hill, never once had Onstar called me even when I got into a fender with an SUV of which as well the airbags still didn't deploy. You never know these insurance companies like to cut corners so they don't have to total it out.

Did you try contacting they guy who ended up with your "totaled" car letting him/her know?

I have never heard of being able to keep the deer. I was always told that you had to get permission from teh DNR first. I still have a totaled 02 Z24 (they let me buy it back after a lot of arguing) in my garage with a clean title from the state. Once a car hits a set age and value they do not salvage title them anymore. Well at least in Mi.

Definitely a buy-back, those 17" OEM wheels are easily $350 and there is plenty good left.
That being said, I hope they total it, that front is TOAST.

It doesn't take much to total a car. Airbags are expensive! I recently saw a 2011 Honda Odyssey with roughly 9,xxx miles get in a fender bender. Every single airbag went off. Actual damage value minus airbags? ~$3200.

The car was for sale at a dealer on the other side of the state. I thought about call the state on that but I think its rather common in the use car market. Now Carfax not mentioning it now that is another matter. This was back in 2006 when you still could pay and get unlimited Carfax reports for a certain price at the time I was looking for a used car for my son and still had several of my old cars vin numbers so I just look them up to see what came up. Boy was I surprised to see that car not only was still for sale but it came with a so called clean record on Carfax.
