im not concerned about the sugar thing ,,
I just dont like the fact the filler is on the passenger side of the car , im used to it being on drivers side , lol , like most cars .
Point being so that when you pull up to the pump, you can get out without bashing your door into the safety poles.

i agree. sugar wont harm newer vehicles. if you really want to ruin someones engine you must use valve lapping compound. you pour it in and loosens everything up.
and with the filler being on the passenger side, now my girlfriend gets to bash the door in.......![]()
I have been e-mailing Stant and received a reply that they now believe they have a locking gas cap. Their concern was whether the filler door would close properly. They gave me the item number, I ordered it through Amazon.com and after it came in the mail, I tried it and it worked!
The only down-side is you won't be able to transfer over the plastic tethered cord to the new cap (should you elect to get one).
If you're interested, the manufacture is: "Stant" and the lockable gas cap number is: 10504
If your local auto store doesn't carry it, you can order it through Amazon.com.
I've had it now for about a month without any problems. That includes not having the "Check Engine" light come on.

Was the door still shut-able with no rubbing?
That might be fine… but I don't want anyone to be able to open my gas cap.
Years ago, when I was in high school… I heard some "friends" of mine as a joke (an expensive joke), pour sugar down into the gas tanks of cars at night.
Ever since then, I've always had locking gas caps as a deterrent. Most new cars have locking fuel filler doors. I was really surprised the Sonic doesn't offer this feature, even though the fuel filler door has holes drilled to accommodate a locking feature.
As soon as Stant offers a lockable fuel cap for the Sonic, I'll buy one!
Locking Fuel Caps
False! snopes.com: Sugar in the Gas Tank
Does anyone research these folk tales? I have never heard of anyone receiving damage from anything poured in the tank that wasn't their own fault.
I'm just so glad the sonic doesn't have the thing you have to push from the inside to unlock the fuel door. That's so annoying.
How is it annoying? My last two cars had that and it was less annoying than putting the key in the car to start it.
Sugar is a folk tale, but a few weeks ago some malicious idiot poured a bottle of water into the gas tank of a friend's car. He was able to drive about 2 miles before he was stranded on the roadside. He bought a locking gas cap after he paid $230 to have his car towed to the dealership and have the tank drained and cleaned.
No damage, except to his bank account. Thankful that the liquid used wasn't something more harmful than water that could have damaged his fuel injectors, catalyst or Oxygen sensors!
It's annoying when you're not used to it and forget to hit the button, have the gas pump ready and go to open the gas door to put the nozzle in, but then you have to go back around to the driver's side and push the button to open the gas door up.
I've only had one car with the gas door unlock inside, and over half the time I would forget it because I wasn't used to it.
The real annoying thing to me is that the gas cap is on the passenger side... but my last car was also on the passenger side so I'm at least used to it, but I don't like it.
