I think some things just do too much thinking for us. Same with the light set-up. I live in a pretty dense area, and if I park a certain way, my lights go into someones apartment. Too many times I turn it on, or the wipers, and I am not going anywhere right away. I would have preferred a position where I could have manually set the lights off and they stay off, even with the key being cycled.

Have you tried moving the headlight knob momentarily to the far left 'OFF' position when in the scenario you described? I suspect that would disable the lights being on with the wipers, but have never tried it.

Honestly, I applaud GM for forcing the lights to turn on because today's average motorist is a complete moron when it comes to proper light usage. Just because THEY can see, they do not find it necessary to turn on the lights. Especially in the rain. So I think it's not a bad idea that the car does more thinking than the driver. ;)

DRL's without automatic headlight control have also contributed to the dumbing down of society. Couple those with gauge clusters that are lit all the time and people instantly assume that because they can see in front of them at night and they can see their gauges then the rest of their lights must be on. GM had the foresight to attempt to protect these idiots from themselves by offering standard automatic light control, if only other manufacturers would follow suit...
