Intake manifold help

OK I don't chime in too often b/c I am an 09 Aveo owner, but our engines are nearly the same. Ive got the NA basics-intake, headers, exhaust with no cats, and tune. Ive been looking at the Dbilas intake manifold for the 1.6/1.8 VVT Ecotecs. It will delete the staged butterflies within the intake manifold and claims , when retuned, +20 hp. The aveo site doesn't have the HP seekers that are on here, so I need ur guys help with a few questions
1. Can I remove the butterflies within the stock manifold and gain mid range/top end.....would this plan of attack require a retune or would the ECU relearn the added air flow???
2. My other option is to buy the Dbilas ($1250) piece or find a Chicago based fabricator to create a one off based on the aforementioned model
3. Emissions legality is more important than a couple of HP, so would these intake mani mods throw a OBD DTC???
My plans are to max out my 1.6 and eventually swap in the 1.8, or rebuild my block with 1.8 displacement and higher compression.....I know turbo is a better bang for the buck but Ive had 2 turbo four cylinders and want to take a crack at NA building. Can u offer any insights as to what move I should make???? thanks in advance

If want to keep it emissions legal buy another intake and swap during that time of year. I'm sure you can delete it from the stock IM but you'll need to have it retuned for the butterflys. If you'd at the stage you want to go NA and want to see where you can take it I would pick up a Honda sheet metal IM off ebay and have it cut down to fit rather then starting from scratch. Also if you haven't installed cams yet contact web.

A thinner head gasket would raise your comp also head porting and milling will give you the power and TQ without losing your Emissions

I plan on doing headwork, but I wasn't expecting much. I was thinking a mild port n polish because I didn't think cams were out there. I will take ur suggestion and look into web cams. I was planning to do this in steps as the $ comes available, but I also seen some of Midtr74 (???) posts saying u cant get too aggressive on cam profiles cus the springs are really weak.

If I had access to a head I would modify a intake manifold.

Start with the IM first. What type of tuning do you have? Can it delete the butterfly's?

I am looking to find a wreck or a junkyard jewel to get the head, meanwhile I was looking in to the Dbilas manifold, but if I can get rid of the butterflies to reduce mid/ top end restrictions I would go with a modified stock piece to free up some $ . As stated earlier I don't want to throw codes and swapping manifolds every 2 years kinda sucks, but I would if necessary. Lastly, I gota Trifecta tune, right now Im waiting for the update.

I dont see the VIM valve being much of a restriction on a stockish engine. That would be the least of my worries for restriction on the intake path.

I am sure that you will find that the 20 HP claim for the intake manifold was compared to a stock intake on a stock program. I could probably make the same claims right now with just minor changes and tuning. If I go purely off of air flow numbers (I know its not the most accurate) I am hitting a theoretical 164 HP at the crank, compared to the 137 I was showing when everything was stock. Assuming those numbers are true (I will still only claim 138 since I have not been to a dyno) that would mean that from a high flow second cat, 2.5" exhaust, DDMW intake with AEM filter, and tuning I have managed to pick up an extra 27 HP at the crank. I would suspect that the majority of that is just from playing with HPT.

As far as I know the 1.8 does not have the tumblers that the 1.4 has.
