It depends on soo many factors you couldn't really say which is better than the other until they are actually matched up head to head. an N/A 2.0 could make more power than the 1.4T but still lose to it in a battle due to the power band or bad driving.

In most situations that would be correct Eric. Let's say someone built a 2.0 turbo from the 1.8 and someone else built the 1.4 into 1.6 buy with the exact same turbo as the 2.0 chances are the 2.0 would win.

that is true, Induction accounts for reduction. As we all know the 1.4T although smaller than the 1.8 makes more power due to the massive amounts of air the tiny turbo crams into the motor.

I just skimmed through and have to agree with Tmo ( i think) about if you plan on going turbo you need to watch your compression, but I mean hell, if you pump it up to 2.0 and do crazy work you could hit the 200whp mark. I mean ****, if my old LS/Vtec was 213whp without too much crazy work then you better be able to hit 200whp with a built 1.8.
Personally, I don't think the 1.8 will ever get too much when it comes to all motor builds vs people wanting TC/SC kits.

and if you spent all that money on the 1.4, it will be faster.

If you plan on boosting it you should start specing out the turbo with the displacement you want to run (2.0), and a realistic HP/TQ output as these and their interaction together will largely determine what upgrades you WILL need.
From what it sounds like you want to do Rods, pistons, and possibly crank will need to be upgraded. Thats if you boost, if you plan to just bore it or stroke it stock rods and crank will/may work. also your proper compression ratio will depend if you N/A or FI the engine.
My advice keep working with Top Speed Motorsports and tell them what you'd like to do, can afford, and what you're acceptable with doing and bounce suggestions around with them until you have a clear plan with reasonable expectations. If you go with a hot NA 2.0L and THEN decide to turbo it you just wasted alot of money unless you built in the compnent headroom for the addition of a turbo.
my 2 cents, I'd cant wait to see what comes of this, be it a NA 2.0l, turbo 1.8, or something else entirely

Pistons will be a must. Per GM rods are forged, so they might hold up just fine. Who knows what the crank can hold up to. Stock cast crank in the LD9 has been proven to hold up to over 500 WHP without issue, properly built engine of course.
Not sure if this iron block uses sleeves or not, but I doubt it. Either way cylinder wall thickness will be something to check before boring it out.
